Atlanta Hawks at Orlando Magic

7:00 PM ET, Kia Center
Orlando is a 3.5-point favorite with the total at 235.5. My play is the Atlanta Hawks +3.5 (-115 at FanDuel).
Orlando hasn’t beaten Atlanta in five tries. The Hawks swept all four meetings last season and won them by an average of 15 points, and now the books want me to lay points against them because the Magic have a new coach and a home crowd. Hard pass. I’ll take the team that already knows the answers to this test.
Atlanta brings back the five that broke the season open
The Hawks were 26-30 at the All-Star break and looked like a play-in team. Then they went 20-6 the rest of the way and posted the second-best defense in the league after the break. That turnaround ran through one lineup: CJ McCollum, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu outscored opponents by 20.3 points per 100 possessions when they shared the floor. Quin Snyder says he’s opening the season with the group that finished last year together.
Johnson is coming off his first All-NBA season, and he fills every box on the stat sheet. Alexander-Walker won Most Improved Player, and he treats Orlando like a personal shooting gym. He averaged 28 points against the Magic last season, including a career-high 41 on March 16.
The supporting cast got deeper, too. Atlanta added Luguentz Dort and Aaron Wiggins, two rotation pieces from Oklahoma City’s 2025 title team, then rolled through a 4-1 preseason, finishing with a 135-111 win at Dallas.

Orlando still has to prove it can make a shot
The Magic’s problem is old and stubborn. Their offense has been worse than the league average for 14 straight seasons. Last year they got plenty of wide-open threes and missed them anyway, ranking 28th in the league at knocking those down. Their effective field-goal percentage, a shooting number that gives extra credit for threes, ranked 25th.
Sean Sweeney is supposed to fix that. He’s a first-time head coach, hired after Jamahl Mosley was fired following a first-round exit in which Orlando blew a 3-1 lead to Detroit. Sweeney comes from San Antonio’s staff, which took the Spurs from 25th to third on defense. That’s a good résumé, but opening night is the first regular-season game of a brand-new system, and he’s working short-handed. Anthony Black, who was supposed to run the second unit, is out after missing the entire preseason with a sprained ankle. Jonathan Isaac, Noah Penda and Izaiyah Nelson are out too. Franz Wagner is playing, but he’s coming off right shoulder soreness that knocked him out of the preseason finale.
What could go wrong
Orlando gets to the free-throw line better than anyone (first in the league in free-throw rate last season), and Paolo Banchero can live there when his jumper isn’t falling. The Magic also clean up their own glass (fifth in defensive rebounding), which takes away second chances from a Hawks team that ranked 20th on the offensive boards. Atlanta’s post-break surge came against a soft schedule, too, with most of those wins coming against teams that finished below .500. And Banchero, Wagner and Desmond Bane are three 20-point scorers in front of their own fans. If Bane gets hot early, this can flip in a hurry.
The number matters here. This opened at Magic -2.5 and moved to -3.5. I’m playing it at +3.5 or +3, it drops to a lean at +2.5, and I’d pass at +2 or less.
My number: Hawks 116, Magic 113. Atlanta’s guards make the Magic work for every clean look, Alexander-Walker keeps owning this matchup, and the Hawks could steal it outright.
The Pick: Atlanta Hawks +3.5 (-115)
