Minnesota Timberwolves at Miami Heat

Miami is a 1.5-point favorite with the total at 242.5. My play is the Miami Heat -1.5 (-108 at FanDuel).

Two of the summer’s biggest swings land on the same floor tonight. Giannis Antetokounmpo plays his first game that counts in a Heat jersey, and LaMelo Ball makes his Timberwolves debut next to Anthony Edwards. The market can’t separate them. This line opened at Heat -1.5 and hasn’t budged, and ESPN’s matchup predictor calls it basically a coin flip. I can separate them, and it starts with who’s standing near the rim.

Minnesota traded away its muscle, and Giannis is waiting

To get Ball, the Wolves sent out Naz Reid and Julius Randle, two bigs who combined for nearly 13 rebounds a night last season. That’s a lot of size to lose for a team that already ranked 20th in defensive rebounding. Jonathan Kuminga is the new answer at power forward, and Minnesota mostly needs him to rebound and defend. He’s talented, but NBA.com describes a five-year veteran “still searching for a comfortable NBA home and a true identity as a pro.”

Now Kuminga gets a two-time MVP on night one. Antetokounmpo shot 62.4% from the floor last season, and he and Bam Adebayo give Erik Spoelstra a frontcourt NBA.com calls perhaps the best in the league. Neither one is on tonight’s injury report. Giannis gave a quick preview in the exhibition season too, with 20 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists against Brooklyn while Miami won the paint 62-38.

Miami already ran. Now it runs with a freight train.

Here’s the number I keep coming back to. Last season, 24.9% of Miami’s possessions came in transition, the highest rate in the 22 years Synergy has tracked it. Miami also played the fastest pace in the league. Add Giannis, who has scored 1.21 points per transition possession over the last five years against a league average of 1.13, and the Heat’s favorite play just got a lot scarier.

The half-court question is real, but Miami loaded up on shooting around its two bigs. Bobby Portis hit 45.6% of his threes last season, Andrew Wiggins hit 41.4% and Tim Hardaway Jr. hit 40.7%. That’s enough spacing to keep defenses from parking everyone in the paint.

Minnesota’s depth is the other crack. Donte DiVincenzo is out after Achilles surgery, so the minutes behind Edwards and Ball go to Ayo Dosunmu, Terrence Shannon Jr., Jaylen Clark and Cody Williams. Ball can make that group better. He’s a gifted passer, and NBA.com rated the shots his passes created among the best in the league. His own shot selection is another story: he ranked 174th out of 183 high-volume shooters in shot quality last season.

The case against me

Edwards is the best player on the floor some nights. He averaged 28.8 points last season, and Ball’s job is to get him more catch-and-shoot threes, which Edwards made at a 49.6% clip. Minnesota also had the better team last year by net rating and swept the season series, including a 125-115 win in this building.

Health is the other worry. Giannis played only 36 games last season. Adebayo was held out of Miami’s last three exhibitions, one of them for groin tightness, and Klay Thompson went 3-of-20 from three in the preseason. A new roster can look clunky in its first real game.

At this price, I don’t need Miami to be great, just better by two. I’ll play the Heat at -1.5 or -2.5. At -3 or higher, I’d pass. If you’d rather not sweat a one-point win, the moneyline at -118 (FanDuel) is a fine substitute.

My final: Heat 121, Timberwolves 116. Giannis and Bam own the glass, the Heat get out and run off misses, and Minnesota’s thin bench gives back whatever Edwards builds.
