Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns jerseys facing off at center court inside Mortgage Matchup Center in downtown Phoenix

Orlando Magic at Phoenix Suns

9:00 PM ET, Mortgage Matchup Center

The Phoenix Suns are 1.5-point favorites over the Orlando Magic at most books, with the total at 223.5. My play is Magic +1.5.

Which tired, losing team do you trust less? That’s the whole question tonight, and I don’t love either answer. Phoenix is 1-5 and has dropped four straight. Orlando is 2-5 and playing without Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs. Neither team has earned your money. I’ll tell you which one I’d rather back for a small play, and I’ll be honest that this is a lean, not a hammer.

The Suns had a long night Wednesday, and their defense was already a mess

Phoenix played at home last night and got run off its own floor by Portland, 132-119. The Blazers outscored the Suns 43-25 in the second quarter and never looked back. Devin Booker scored 33 and went 13-for-13 at the line in 34 minutes, and Jalen Green added 22. That’s a lot of work from the two guys Phoenix needs most, and they turn around tonight on zero days of rest.

The bigger problem isn’t fatigue. It’s that the Suns can’t guard anybody. Through their first five games, Basketball Reference had Phoenix allowing 124.5 points per 100 possessions, more than 11 points worse than league average. Then Portland hung 132 on them. Mark Williams is out with a shoulder injury, and Jordan Goodwin (calf) and Rasheer Fleming (ankle) are listed as day-to-day, so help isn’t coming from the bench. A team that leaky shouldn’t be laying points to anyone on the back end of a back-to-back.

Orlando’s offense has to find someone besides Franz

Now the Magic side, which has its own problems. The official injury report has five Orlando players out: Banchero (high ankle sprain), Suggs (knee contusion), Jonathan Isaac, Noah Penda and Izaiyah Nelson. Without Banchero, Boston spent Sunday keying on Franz Wagner, and the offense has gone cold at home. The Magic scored 93, 97 and 94 in three of their four home games, and they’re 0-4 in Orlando.

On the road, they’ve been a different team. Orlando is 2-1 away from home, including a 121-114 win in Toronto in which Desmond Bane scored 28, Wagner put up 26 and 11 assists, and the Magic hit 18 of 34 threes. Anthony Black and Tristan da Silva each scored 23 in the loss to Boston, so there’s some scoring behind Wagner. They also had Wednesday off while Phoenix was getting beaten up by Portland. Against a Suns defense this bad, Orlando’s shooters should get clean looks.

Why I’m only leaning

Orlando’s whole night depends on the three-point line. The Magic have shot 47.4% from deep in their wins and 27.2% in their losses, and that swing decides most of their games. A cold-shooting Orlando team without its two best creators can easily get stuck on 95 points, and Booker can win a game like this by himself. The Suns’ injury report also wasn’t in yet as of early Thursday, so check it before tip. This is a near pick’em between two flawed teams, and nothing in the numbers says to bet big.

Still, I’d rather take the rested team getting points than lay them with a tired team that just gave up 132.

Projected score: Magic 112, Suns 110
