We wonder if the ghosts of Butkus and Brown might wander the sidelines when the Browns host the Bears for an interesting inter-conference match-up Sunday afternoon in Cleveland.

The Browns are trying to make a run to the playoffs, and Chicago ain’t dead yet, either, heading into the first meeting between these teams since the passing of those two franchise greats.

Betting Markets

The Week 15 NFL betting market opened Cleveland as a three-point home favorite for Sunday, with an over/under of right around 38. Both numbers were holding steady in the early betting action.

Bears-Browns Betting Preview

Chicago is 3-1 SU over its last four games and 4-0-1 ATS over its last five after defeating rival Detroit last Sunday 28-13. The Bears scored the first 10 points of the game but trailed 13-10 at the half. Chicago then dominated the second half, outscoring the Lions 15-0, and cashed in at +130 on the money line.

The Bears out-gained Detroit 336-267 and won the turnover battle 3-0.

Chicago has now out-gained four of its last five opponents and out-rushed each of its last ten foes!

Four games ago, the Bears beat Carolina 16-13. Then they blew that game at Detroit. Then they won at Minnesota and just beat the Lions.

Realistically, Chicago should own a four-game winning streak.

At 5-8 overall, the Bears only trail 6-7 Green Bay by one game – and five other teams – in the battle for the No. 7 spot in the NFC playoff standings. And the way things are going 8-9 might make it.

Meanwhile, Cleveland just snapped a two-game losing skid with a 31-27 victory over Jacksonville last Sunday. The Browns, with veteran Joe Flacco making his second start for his new team, scored the first 14 points and never trailed. Cleveland later led 28-14 in the fourth quarter and held on from there for the W and the cover at -2.

The Browns out-gained the Jaguars 389-293. So Cleveland’s out-gained five of its last seven opponents.

Three weeks ago, the Browns lost at Denver 29-12. Two weeks ago, in Flacco’s first start, Cleveland only trailed the Rams 20-19 late and had the ball before an interception led to a 16-0 Los Angeles spurt over the last four minutes and a 36-19 loss.

At 8-5 overall, the Browns would be the No. 5 seed in the AFC if the playoffs started today.

These teams last met two seasons ago, a 26-6 Cleveland victory. Baker Mayfield quarterbacked the Browns that day against Justin Fields for da Bears.

We like both these teams. In fact, we bet both of them last week and cashed in. For this contest, we expect Chicago to win the ground battle, and teams that win the ground battles in the NFL cover the spread about 65 percent of the time. Also, Fields is a much more dynamic weapon than Flacco. Also, Cleveland may lead the Bears by three games in the W-L columns, but statistically speaking, these teams are much closer than that. We like Chicago, plus the points.
