Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles is a 9.5-point home favorite over Arizona with a total of 47.5. My play is the Cardinals getting the points.
Two things point me here. The Chargers are integrating new pieces on defense, and the head-to-head ATS history doesn’t support laying nearly 10 points against Arizona.
Jesse Minter is gone. The Chargers’ defensive coordinator for the last two years took the Baltimore Ravens head coaching job in the offseason, which means Los Angeles is running a completely new defensive system in Week 1 with a first-time defensive coordinator installing everything from scratch. That’s a real installation risk. Week 1 defenses under new coordinators consistently give up big plays, blown coverages, and third-down conversions they shouldn’t. It’s not a criticism of the players or the scheme — it’s the reality of installing a new system in five weeks of training camp.
Add that to Mike McDaniel joining as offensive coordinator. Yes, that’s an offensive upgrade for the Chargers on paper — McDaniel’s Miami offenses were among the most explosive in the league — but it’s also another new system that needs Week 1 execution reps to click. Justin Herbert is talented enough to make it work, but two new coordinators installing new systems in the same game creates uncertainty that the market may be underpricing.

Meanwhile, Arizona brings continuity. Jacoby Brissett returns as the starting quarterback after finishing 2025 with 3,366 yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 starts. He knows Mike LaFleur’s offense, he has chemistry with Trey McBride (an All-Pro tight end) and Marvin Harrison Jr., and he’s not going to make many mental mistakes. Brissett won’t win a shootout, but he’ll manage the game and give the Cardinals a chance.
The Cardinals also have Jeremiyah Love, the rookie running back who was Notre Dame’s star in 2025. Even with an ankle injury making him questionable, Tyler Allgeier is a legitimate NFL back who can move the ball. The offense won’t be scary, but it can score 20+ points against a Chargers defense that’s still figuring out its identity.
The head-to-head data supports fading the Chargers here. Los Angeles is just 3-3 against the spread in their last six meetings against Arizona — matching Chargers dominance doesn’t show up in this specific matchup the way the market keeps expecting. When a favorite is 3-3 ATS in a six-game sample against a specific opponent, laying nearly 10 points against them is asking a lot.
Realistic outcomes: Chargers 27, Cardinals 20 (covers +9.5); Chargers 24, Cardinals 17 (barely covers by 0.5); or Chargers 30, Cardinals 24 (covers +9.5 comfortably). Every one of those results has the Cardinals staying within a touchdown-plus. Only a Chargers win by 10+ points loses the ticket, and given the coordinator changes and the historical ATS pattern in this matchup, that’s not the most likely outcome.
