On Sunday, the New York Giants come to the northwest to face the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks have won two in a row to go to 5-3, including a Sunday 30-24 win over the Oakland Raiders. The Giants, however, have lost three in a row, including a deflating Monday Night Football loss to the Colts. At 3-5, they need to make something good happen and quickly. Coming into Seattle on the short week, however, is a pretty tough spot.

The Giants scored a pair of touchdowns in the 4th quarter on Monday Night to make the score look somewhat respectable, but it was 40-10 in the 4th quarter. All told, it was a horrendous effort by a home Giants team that really needed to win and was coming off the bye week. Its time to wonder if they have it in them to bounce back, after laying such an egg in a game they really needed.

Seattle has also had people wondering this season. At times this year, it has looked like they are having a typical Super Bowl hangover. But as they hit the second-half of the season with a 5-3 record following consecutive wins, there is some optimism. But even in their two-game win streak, they have been less-than-sizzling. They needed a late TD against Carolina to scrape by, 13-9, before winning a 30-24 game on Sunday over winless Oakland.

Adding to the Seattle promise for the last 8 games of the season is the return of some key players. On Sunday, for example, they were using their 3rd string center, to illustrate how badly theyve been banged up. C Max Unger will be making his way back, along with T Russell Okung. Safety Kam Chancellor is back, along with S Jeron Johnson and CB Jeremy Lane. DT Jordan Hill is also scheduled back. There are still some outstanding injuries on defense, namely with Bobby Wagner and Malcolm Smith in the linebacking unit, along with corner Byron Maxwell (questionable). Some unfavorable player moves, the injury to TE Zach Miller, and the loss of Golden Tate to Detroit continue to hamper the offense, which seems to have taken a step back this season.

Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse are Seattles main aerial threats and while they are dependable and useful players, the lack of playmakers in the passing-game is starting to hurt. Marshawn Lynch is warming to the task and could be big in the second-half. QB Russell Wilson is always a valuable weapon under center, both with his arm and legs, but he is handcuffed by a lack of game-changers on offense. Even last season with more weaponry, they were still light on playmakers, especially for a Super Bowl-winning team. But now, its basically Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, and a bunch of players suited for purely complimentary roles.

Eli Manning has his own issues, as the Giants 2014 season is getting away from them. After an 0-2 start, the Giants rebounded with three straight wins. It looked like Manning and the offense had started gelling under new offensive coordinator Bob McAdoo. But then they lost Rashad Jennings, which rendered their run game nearly moot. And in the last two games, Manning seems off-key with his playmakers. The defense, meanwhile, has given up 71 points in the last 2 games.

On offense, the only shining light is the play of rookie WR Odell Beckham, Jr., who is springing to life after a delayed start to his rookie campaign. On Monday, he had 8 catches for 156 yards and thats something they can continue to build on. Its just time to start asking if theres something about McAdoos system that simply isnt suitable for Manning and Company. Once one of the more reliable deep-threat quarterbacks in the game, Manning has completed only two passes where he aired it out beyond 20 yards. The system has changed the way Manning drops back and handles his reads and it just doesnt seem to be clicking, despite a 3-game stretch where it was actually working pretty well. Maybe it can be attributed to the run game going into the toilet.

Can the Giants offense spring to life in this unlikely spot? Will it help that the Giants are facing an offense that is struggling putting up points, as opposed to the dynamic Colts offense they ran into on MNF? Or is it just not the Giants year? With a bunch of key guys rejoining the fray for Seattle, was their lackluster first-half more of an aberration and will they start rounding back into championship form?

On one hand, you want to extend the Giants some leeway and this is a critical game for them. Falling to 3-6 would pretty much make 2014 a wrap, so if anything, they will be desperate. But that same situation applied to MNF, where they were slaughtered and offered very little in the way of pride or fighting spirit. Seattle is a different team, however, and maybe the Giants will match up better with them, despite the unfavorable road conditions and the short week.

On one hand, Seattle is getting stronger with returning pieces and this could be a spot where we see a Seahawks beating, similar to what happened in week one against Green Bay. New York is in trouble and could be prime for plucking. But maybe the Seahawks need an extra week or two, as they work returning players back into the fold. And with this Seattle offense, one would want to see some more consistently-good results before backing them while giving away double-digit points. I like the Giants to cover the spread.

Scott’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: Im betting on the New York Giants plus 10 points.
