On November 25th, NFL’s Monday Night Football will feature the San
Francisco 49ers
taking on the Washington Redskins.
What many thought would be a battle among NFC title contenders, has positioned
itself in a totally different light. Washington is all but done while the
49ers are now having to fight for their playoff lives. Trailing the Seattle
Seahawks by 3 games in the NFC West, San Fran’s only hope now appears to
be a berth as a wildcard team. At 6-4, and having dropped their last two
games, even a wildcard berth is not a given. With all that said, the Niners
come into this game as five point favorites and the total points are set
at 47.5. This is yet another game that appears to be easy to predict, that
of course will not play out like any of us imagined.

Prior to this season starting, the Washington Redskins were looked at as one of the top four or five teams in all of the NFC. Sports writers, Redskins fans, and others expected this team to do great things once Robert Griffin III returned to his full strength. Even head coach Mike Shannahan was quoted saying: “This is a team you’re going to be proud of.” Not only did he say that, but seconds later went on to say that his players “have set expectations: anything less than a Super Bowl is a failure.” Well here we are, week 12, and the Washington Redskins sit at 3-7, and in dead last place in the NFC East division. RG3, as he is called, has led the Redskins to this dismal record due to his lack of performance in what appears to be a “sophomore slump” type season. Griffin has already thrown 10 INTs and fumbled the ball 10 times as well. This is what has caused the lack of success in the nation’s capital. Statistically speaking, Washington is quite impressive overall. They rank 1st in the NFL in rushing, and RG has thrown well enough (when to his own team) to rank his team just outside the leagues top ten in passing. If Washington could eliminate turnovers, they would be a much better, and much more competitive ball club. The key to winning this game and making the playoff hunt even more difficult for San Fran is just that….protect the ball. Simple as that, control the ball, play D, win the game…or at least cover the 5.

San Francisco has been a shock to many this season. They went all the way to the Super Bowl last season only to fall just short to the Baltimore Ravens. I said all offseason long, not to expect much from this team this year. Why you ask? The read option. The read option is the biggest fraud in the NFL since the wildcat formation. This isn’t college. Professional defenses learn to adjust quickly. Colin Kaepernick is a great athlete, don’t get me wrong, but as a QB, he is average. You cannot live and die by the read option and the Niners are slowly finding this out this season. San Fran is the worst passing team in the NFL and in today’s game, that just simply isn’t going to cut it. San Francisco is too good and too balanced of a team to be barely on the verge of making the playoffs. This is simple. If the 49ers are going to travel across the country and win a game, they better pass the ball, and pass it well. This game will not be easy regardless of who they are facing off against. If the 49ers don’t keep Washington’s defense on their toes, they may not escape with a win….much less a 5 point cover.

Bob’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: I find it completely comical how week after week, so many squares continue to pound the favorites in the NFL. The last four weeks of the season, the underdog has been the play to make. I want to know what San Fran has done so well to make 78% of the people think they will travel across the continent and get a win, much less a five point cover against a team that may not have the best record, but is highly talented. This is my best bet of the week. The Washington Redskins will not only cover the spread, but they win the game. It will not be pretty but the Skins will scrap and claw and somehow find a way to send the 49ers back to California with a 6-5 record. Take the under and take the Washington Redskins to cover the five points!
