Location: It only seems fitting that Los Angeles, California was the host city to the first official Super Bowl game. The back-drop of palm trees, Hollywood, and the Pacific Ocean helped explain why more than 61,000 fans flocked to the game. But more importantly than the surrounding beauty of LA, was the atmosphere of the championship game itself. Lets take a look at how the game shaped up, and other Super Bowl tidbits that you may find interesting to know.
Game Summary: The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I 35-10. The Packers crossed into the end zone to take an early 7-0 lead on a 1st quarter 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bart Starr to wide receiver Max McGee.
Kansas City responded in the second quarter as quarterback Len Dawson connected on a 7-yard touchdown pass to Curtis McClinton that tied the game at 7-7. Green Bay answered quickly with a 14-yard rushing TD by J. Taylor to regain the lead 14-7. The Chiefs responded once more in the last minute of the 2nd quarter as M. Mercer hit a 31-yard field goal to make it a 14-10 Packers lead at halftime.

The 2nd half of Super Bowl I was all Green Bay as they came out of the locker room with one goal in mind- shut down the Chiefs! The Packers scored two TDs in the 3rd quarter with the first strike on a 5-yard run by running back Elijah Pitts, and the other on a 13-yard pass from Starr to McGee.
In the 4th quarter it was once again the Packers who pushed the lead to 25 points on another rushing TD by Elijah Pitts, this time a 1-yard scamper which finalized the score at 35-10. Kansas Citys defense was no match for the fired up Packers offense in this game. The Packers defense, led by legendary Ray Nitschke, who had 7 tackles and one sack on the day, had no problems shutting down the Chiefs attack in the second half.

Behind the Scenes Story: Some people may not know this story, but rumor has it that Green Bay receiver Max McGee, who was actually a backup player with hardly any real playing time, was in no shape to be on the field in Super Bowl I. McGee apparently spent the night and early morning before the game out on the town celebrating/partying. McGee was quoted as saying I waddled in about 7:30 in the morning and I could barely stand up for kickoff. He thought there was no way he would see the field until Boyd Dowler was injured early in the game which sent McGee from a hangover on the bench onto the field in the biggest game of his life! McGee, somehow, stepped up to the call and had an MVP day of his own by pulling in two TD passes and helping the Packers secure Super Bowl I. We dont recommend any athlete to pull an all-nighter the night before a game but in this case it worked out for the Packers.
