No. 21 Wake Forest at California

10:30 PM ET, California Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, CA
No. 21 Wake Forest is a 9.5-point favorite at Cal with a total of 53.5. My play is Wake Forest -9.5.
This one won’t be decided until well after midnight on the East Coast. Winston-Salem will be asleep, the porch lights will be off, and the only people still awake will be Deacons fans and whoever has money on this spread. That fits a program that has run on the mantra “Built in the Dark” since Jake Dickert arrived in 2025. Nobody saw this coming: the ACC media poll picked Wake 13th out of 17. Now the Deacons sit alone in second place in the league after three straight conference wins, including a road upset of ranked Louisville, and they’re in the Top 25 for the first time since 2022.
Gio Lopez is why this isn’t a fluke. The transfer quarterback has 13 touchdown passes against one interception, and he’s accounted for nine touchdowns over the last two games alone. His favorite target, Carlos Hernandez, leads the ACC in receiving yards. Cal coach Tosh Lupoi summed up how preparing for Lopez has gone: “I don’t sleep a lot, and now it’s less.”
Wake also takes care of the football, which matters more than usual this week. The Deacons give it away about once every two games, and Cal’s defense leads the ACC with seven interceptions. Something has to give, and I trust the quarterback who has thrown one pick all year.
Cal’s run defense is where Wake goes shopping. Cal’s pass defense is legit, allowing just 192.5 yards a game. Its run defense is not, giving up 175 rushing yards a game, 122nd in the country. Wake has the pieces to lean on it. Lopez has six rushing touchdowns, and Deuce Lawrence and Ty Clark III split the backfield work. If Cal sells out to take away Hernandez, the Deacons grind. If Cal crowds the line, Lopez throws over it.
And Cal’s offense is held together with tape. The Bears can barely run the ball as it is, and now running backs Adam Mohammed and Carter Vargas are both questionable. Starting quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is questionable with a head injury after missing the Virginia Tech game. Jackson Brousseau played well in his first start, throwing for 321 yards without a pick, but a one-dimensional offense led by a backup is a lot to ask against a Wake defense that hasn’t allowed a second-half point in its last two games.
The models are with me, too. SP+, which grades teams on how efficiently they play snap to snap, makes Wake about a 13-point favorite, and one model projects a 32-22 final. At 9.5, the market is still a little short.
Virginia Tech fell into this exact trap a week ago
This is the part that keeps me from betting the house. Last week Virginia Tech came to Berkeley as a double-digit favorite and lost 25-20 with Brousseau under center. Wake is flying 2,301 miles for its second straight road game, and a 7:30 local kickoff will feel like 10:30 to the visitors’ body clocks. Dickert isn’t hiding from it: “It will be a unique challenge. There’s no excuses when you go out there and play the game. This is what college football is now.”
He also called Cal “the best defensive team, by far, that we’ve played since Miami,” and the Bears’ red-zone defense is the best in the ACC. That’s how 10-point games turn into 4-point games. A second model has this at -9, right on the market, so my edge isn’t huge. If Sagapolutele and ball-hawking DB Kingston Lopa (five interceptions) are cleared, Cal gets better fast. And Cal won the only previous meeting, 46-36 at Wake in 2024.
So why still lay it? Because the trap needs Cal to do things it hasn’t done consistently: run the ball, stay healthy and cover at home. The Bears are 1-3 ATS in Berkeley. Wake is 3-0 away from home, and the line has ticked from -8.5 to -9.5 toward the Deacons. Last week’s upset is a warning, not a blueprint. I’ll trust the better team, and the better quarterback, to handle the late shift.
How I see it finishing: Wake Forest 31, California 20. I’m comfortable laying it up to -11.
