Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Guardians
AL Division Series Game 1
Saturday, October 3, 2026
1:00 PM ET, Progressive Field
The Guardians are home favorites at -157 in Game 1 of the ALDS against the White Sox at Progressive Field. Chicago sits at +130 on the moneyline. My play is the White Sox at +130.
These two teams could hardly be closer. Cleveland won the AL Central at 85-77, one game ahead of Chicago at 84-78, but the White Sox took the season series 7-6. This is the first postseason meeting between the division rivals, and a full season of evidence says there is very little separating them. At +130, the price suggests otherwise.
The White Sox arrive with momentum. A year after a 121-loss season, Chicago swept Houston on the road in the Wild Card Series for its first playoff series win since 2005. Game 1 was a 6-3 win behind Colson Montgomery’s 432-foot homer, two RBIs from Sam Antonacci and a 2-for-4 night from Chase Meidroth. Game 2 was a 7-3 win in which the White Sox chased Hunter Brown after just two outs with a four-run first inning, and Meidroth broke it open with a three-run homer in the sixth.
Hagen Smith gets the ball for Chicago in an opener role, and he was sharp in the same spot in Houston. The rookie left-hander threw three scoreless innings in Game 1, allowing two hits while getting seven swings and misses. He finished the regular season with a 1.29 ERA. Will Venable’s plan worked perfectly in that game: Smith set the tone, then Sean Newcomb, Nick Sandlin and Grant Taylor finished it, with Taylor striking out three over the final 1.1 innings.
Parker Messick is the reason Cleveland is favored. The left-hander went 12-9 with a 2.55 ERA and has a 2.24 ERA over his last 15 starts, allowing two runs or fewer in 13 of them. That’s an excellent pitcher making his postseason debut. Still, Chicago scored multiple runs in three of its four meetings with Messick this season, and this lineup has already shown it can do damage against good pitching in October.
The Guardians have plenty going for them. They went 24-11 down the stretch, Cade Smith saved 41 games with a 1.95 ERA, and they’re rested after a week off. The White Sox were also just 36-45 on the road in the regular season. But the road record didn’t matter in Houston, and Cleveland’s lineup may be without Rhys Hoskins, who is dealing with back inflammation.
With the wind expected to blow in and a total of 6.5 to 7, this sets up as a low-scoring game where one swing can decide it. In a coin-flip matchup between two teams that split their season almost evenly, taking plus money is the right side.
