Thursday night in Orlando is a season opener where the FBS program is expected to blow out the FCS opponent, and everything about UCF’s recent history against this class of opponent tells us to trust the total staying Over.
The Knights are 42.5-point favorites at home. That’s a huge number for a season opener, but it’s exactly where the market should be given UCF’s recent track record against FCS competition. Their last nine games against FCS opponents have finished with the Knights outscoring their opponents 503-81 combined. That’s an average of 55.9 to 9. So the historical baseline is a UCF team that scores in the mid-50s and gives up single digits.
Do the math with the current total at 57.5. If UCF hits their historical average, they win 56-9 for 65 total points. Well over the number.
Even if UCF has a slow start and only puts up 45 points, they’ve beaten FCS opponents by 40-plus so consistently that Bethune-Cookman is likely to score at least 10-13 points at some point in a game where UCF pulls starters after building a big lead. That gets us to 55-58, right around the total.
The situational factors also favor scoring.
Scott Frost’s team is coming off a disappointing 2025 season. The offense couldn’t sustain drives consistently, and this game is their chance to establish rhythm before things get real. Next week they travel to Pittsburgh, which is a legitimate Power 4 road test. Two weeks later they open Big 12 play against TCU. Frost needs his offense to look sharp and confident. Season openers against overmatched opponents are the exact spot where a coach lets his quarterback throw more, calls the aggressive plays, and pushes for style points to build confidence going into the meat of the schedule.
Bethune-Cookman isn’t going to hold up defensively. They’re an FCS program facing an FBS roster with legitimate scholarship talent across the board. The Wildcats’ only shot at making this game competitive is to produce a few explosive plays on offense. That’s where running back Khamani Robinson comes in. He’s their most dynamic playmaker, and he has the ability to break long runs against overmatched defensive fronts. He won’t do enough to keep it close, but he’ll get his yards and probably find the end zone at least once.
BCU has actually shown they can put up points on the road. The total has gone Over in 5 of their last 9 away games. They’re not a team that goes quietly.
For UCF, the total has gone Over in 12 of their last 20 home games. That’s 60%. Combine that with the historical FCS blowout pattern and the situational push to build offensive momentum, and the Over becomes the cleaner play.
I considered the side. UCF -42.5 has support from the same historical data, but 42.5 is a big number to lay in a season opener. If UCF wins 45-13 and covers by 32 points instead of 43, the total still hits the Over comfortably. That’s the reason I’d rather have the total exposure than the spread.
The Pick: Bethune-Cookman/UCF Over 57.5
