New Mexico is laying 9.5 points at most books, and the total sits at a skinny 38.5. My play is New Mexico -9.5.

The market has spent the week running toward Nevada. This line opened with the Lobos at -12.5 and the total at 43.5, and both numbers have come down hard. I get why. New Mexico’s offense sputtered at San Jose State, and road favorites in the Mountain West make people nervous. But the drop has handed us a better price on the best defense in the country against an offense that might not know who its quarterback is until Friday.

A defense that’s rewriting the record book. New Mexico is ranked for the first time in school history, sitting No. 22 in the AP poll at 7-1 and 4-0 in league play. The reason is simple. The Lobos lead FBS in scoring defense at 11.9 points a game, and they’re No. 1 nationally in success rate allowed, meaning opponents rarely stay ahead of the chains on any given snap. They also lead the country in turnover margin at +17. Second-year coach Jason Eck didn’t hedge this week: “I think we have a historic defense.”

The offense got ugly, and it still won. Toa Fa’avae went 9-of-14 for 101 yards and threw three interceptions in Saturday’s 21-16 win at San Jose State. That was New Mexico’s first win in San Jose in 57 years, and the Lobos got it by running the ball 43 times for 231 yards. Kiefer Sibley ripped off 102 yards on 12 carries, and Scottre Humphrey added 87 yards and two scores. Humphrey now has 11 rushing touchdowns on the year. Eck said he wants to simplify the passing game and “create some more easy throws.” Translation: more of the ground game that already works. It’s still an offense scoring 35 points a game, 27th in the nation.

Nevada’s quarterback carousel. This is where the game gets decided. Carter Jones has missed three straight games with an arm injury, and his status is still unclear. In Jones’ starts, Nevada has scored 33 points a game and run for 219.8 yards a game. Without him, it’s 13 points and 114.3 rushing yards. Last week at UCLA was the low point. Luke Duncan started and threw three first-quarter interceptions, AJ Bianco came in, and the Wolf Pack were shut out 27-0 with four picks in all. Head coach Jeff Choate called the situation “one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever dealt with,” and his starting tight end, DJ Asiasi, is out for the season too.

Bianco has been nursing an ankle injury of his own. Choate said, “Hopefully Carter, after this week, will be ready to go again.” Hope isn’t a game plan against a defense that feeds on mistakes. Nevada has forced only three takeaways all season, the fewest in FBS. That’s why the turnover battle in this matchup looks so lopsided.

Where Nevada can hang around. The Wolf Pack defense isn’t the problem. It ranks 23rd nationally in yards per play allowed and held UCLA to 303 yards. Defensive end Dylan LaBarbera has 4.5 sacks, linebacker EJ Smith has 85 tackles, and Eck made a point this week of noting that Choate went 4-0 against Montana while he was at Montana State. This staff knows how to get a team ready for a rivalry-sized game. New Mexico has also never won a game in Reno. The Lobos won last year’s meeting by just two points, 24-22.

What could burn this ticket. If Jones is cleared and close to 100%, this is a different Nevada offense, and nine and a half points is a lot to lay in a game with a total under 40. Fa’avae’s turnover issues could also give the Pack the short fields they can’t create on their own. Watch the injury news on Jones, New Mexico center Kaden Robnett and receiver Massiah Mingo. If the Lobos are missing pieces up front, I’d want a smaller piece of this.

Even so, the price has moved the wrong way for the wrong reasons. A healthy Jones is far from a sure thing. New Mexico’s defense is giving up fewer than 12 points a game. And a Nevada offense with a backup at quarterback has been scoring 13 a game. The Lobos don’t need style points. They need two or three touchdowns and their defense, and that’s been enough all year.

Projected score: New Mexico 26, Nevada 10

The Pick: New Mexico -9.5 (-112)
