Nebraska is a 4.5-point road favorite at most books with the total at 49.5 (a few shops are hanging 50.5). My play is Under 49.5.

Somebody in this Big Ten game is going to need a hug by 11 p.m. Eastern, and I’m not convinced either offense is the one handing it out. Both teams are 5-3. Illinois has won three straight. Nebraska has lost three straight. And the number asks these two to combine for 50 points on a Friday night in Champaign. I’ll take the other side of that.

Nebraska’s defense is carrying a team that can’t stop handing the ball away

Strip away the losing streak and Nebraska’s defense has been terrific. The Blackshirts lead the nation in third-down defense and rank inside the top 15 nationally in total defense, scoring defense, run defense, pass efficiency defense and sacks, per the school’s own weekly release. Against Washington last week they held the Huskies to 32 rushing yards and 267 total yards. That’s a unit that can win a game by itself.

The problem is the other side. Nebraska scored 44 combined points across its last three games against Indiana, Oregon and Washington. Anthony Colandrea opened the year with 13 touchdowns and two picks over a 5-0 start. Over the last three games? Two touchdowns and five interceptions, according to SI. The Washington loss was the whole story in one night: Nebraska outgained the Huskies 387-267, threw three interceptions (one a 48-yard pick-six) and lost 17-10.

Matt Rhule’s response was to move offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen up to the booth to call plays and hand the placekicking to John Hohl. His message this week: “Don’t take a rocking boat and a rocking sea and rock it even more.” That’s a coach asking for clean, simple football. On a short week, simple usually means slower.

Illinois wins ugly now, and it seems to like it that way

The Illini’s three-game run hasn’t been a fireworks show. They came back to beat Oregon 21-10, and the Ducks managed three points on their final 12 drives after scoring on the first one. Then Illinois went to Maryland and won 20-17 on Ethan Moczulski’s walk-off 26-yard field goal. That’s not a team trying to win a shootout. That’s a team trying to hold the ball and squeeze you.

The defense changed when Roger Cooper took over play-calling before the Purdue game. His unit has allowed 22 points a game over those four games, down from 26.5 in the first four, according to Illinois’ game notes. Bret Bielema’s team also protects the ball: just six giveaways all year, 13th-fewest in the country, and it has allowed just one sack per game.

Katin Houser is back at quarterback after breaking his hand at Michigan State on Oct. 10, and he grades well (24th nationally in ESPN’s QBR). But he now gets a Nebraska pass defense that sits ninth in FBS adjusted for opponents, allowing 5.9 yards per attempt. Collin Dixon is a legit star with 10 touchdown catches, but Illinois has been at its best lately when Aidan Laughery and the run game set the tone.

There’s an emotional layer, too. Bielema lost his father and missed his Monday press conference for the funeral. Expect a fired-up home crowd for Dads Day and the “Hail to the Blue Out.” Emotion helps a defense more than it helps a timing-based passing game.

The case against me

Illinois’ defense has real holes. It ranked 136th nationally in red zone defense and 130th in sacks through late October, so if Colandrea gets protected and finally hits on a couple of shots, Nebraska can put up 30 by itself. Nebraska also averaged 32.4 points over the full season. Those five early blowouts (every win by 18 or more) show that this offense can explode. And there’s the turnover risk. A pick-six or a short field wrecks any under in a hurry, and Nebraska has been giving those away.

I’ll live with it. Nebraska’s defense has been elite all year. Illinois’ recent games have finished with 31 and 37 total points. Nebraska’s last three averaged under 15 points a game. And both coaches are telling you they want to shorten this game. Most of the paths to 50 need a turnover gift or two, and Illinois doesn’t hand those out.

Projected score: Nebraska 20, Illinois 17

The Pick: Under 49.5 (-108)
