Virginia Tech Hokies at SMU Mustangs

7:00 PM ET, Gerald J. Ford Stadium, Dallas
SMU is a 6-point home favorite over Virginia Tech, with the total at 55.5 at most books. My play is SMU -6 (-110).
This line opened at SMU -7.5. Since then most of the betting money has come in on Virginia Tech and pushed the number down to 6, with a few spots hanging 5.5. I understand why. The Hokies are coming off a signature win in James Franklin’s first season, a 20-16 stunner at Clemson that ended a losing streak against the Tigers dating to 2007. They had a bye week to enjoy it. SMU, meanwhile, just watched Syracuse score the winning touchdown with 17 seconds left and dropped out of the AP Top 25. One team is riding high and the other is licking its wounds.
I’m going the other way. Both teams are 6-2, both are chasing an ACC title spot, and the loser on Friday picks up a third conference loss. When I look at how these two actually match up, the market moved toward the wrong team.
Jennings against a secondary that can’t take the ball away
Kevin Jennings is having a terrific season. He’s completing 73.7% of his passes for 2,414 yards, 21 touchdowns and five interceptions, and he ranks sixth among 153 qualifying quarterbacks in expected points added per dropback, which basically measures how much each throw improves his team’s chances of scoring. At home he’s been even better: 15 touchdowns, one interception, and SMU is 5-0 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
Virginia Tech’s pass defense ranks 113th by opponent-adjusted efficiency, and it has two interceptions all season. That’s the number I keep coming back to. Brent Pry’s defense lives in the backfield, with 77 tackles for loss, the most in FBS, and it ranks second in havoc rate. But when quarterbacks get the ball out, the Hokies rarely make them pay, and they rank 134th at preventing explosive plays. Jennings had a rough night at Syracuse, getting sacked four times after SMU had allowed only eight sacks through its first seven games. Expect Rhett Lashlee to call a quicker game Friday.
Lashlee summed up the Syracuse loss simply: “We had the turnover. They didn’t. We had the penalties that were all pretty critical. And we took more sacks than we’ve taken all year.” Those are fixable problems.

Virginia Tech’s line is the soft spot
The Hokies’ problem is up front on offense. Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer has been sacked 23 times, and Virginia Tech’s offensive line ranks 124th in line yards, which tracks how much push the blockers get on running plays. The bye helps here: Franklin expects linemen Montavious Cunningham and Brody Meadows back, though left tackle Justin Terry isn’t ready. Still, SMU’s defensive front ranks 37th, it has 22 sacks, and opponents are converting only 27% of their third downs against it. Franklin knows it, saying his team has to “stay out of third-and-longs as much as we possibly can.” That’s a tall order on the road against this group.
Franklin also has some history with this matchup. His Penn State team beat SMU 38-10 in the 2024 College Football Playoff, returning two Jennings interceptions for touchdowns. That was a different Jennings and a different stage, and he has five picks in eight games this year.
What could go wrong? Plenty. SMU is just 2-4-2 against the spread this season, so this team hasn’t been easy money. The Mustangs have given the ball away 11 times while forcing only six turnovers. Virginia Tech hasn’t lost a game by more than five points, and its pass rush is the one thing that could rattle Jennings into a repeat of the Syracuse game. With 13 days of rest against SMU’s six, the Hokies should be the fresher team.
Even so, the numbers point to the home side. GordStats projects SMU by 8.4 with a 70% win probability, and another model has SMU by 8. Buying a team at 6 that opened at 7.5 is a good spot, especially when that team is unbeaten at home and plays a pass defense that can’t get the ball back.
I have this finishing SMU 31, Virginia Tech 23.
The Pick: SMU -6
