East Carolina is a 1.5-point home favorite over South Florida (a few spots are at 2), and the total is 39.5 at most books. My play is a lean on South Florida +1.5 (-110).

When this line first went up, South Florida was the favorite and the total was 45.5. Then quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. left last Saturday’s win over UAB with an undisclosed injury, Brian Hartline declined to name a starter, and the market swung three points to East Carolina while the total dropped six. That’s a big reaction to a player whose status we still don’t know. It’s also a big reaction to a team whose real strength has nothing to do with the quarterback.

I’ll be upfront: this is a lean, not a strong play. With the quarterback situation unsettled, I wouldn’t bet much on either side. But if you want a side, the points are worth taking.

What happened to South Florida without Van Buren?

It won by 20. The Bulls trailed UAB 10-0 when Luke Kromenhoek, the former Florida State and Mississippi State quarterback, came in early in the second quarter. He didn’t do much through the air, completing 7 of 10 passes for 39 yards. He didn’t need to. He ran 15 times for 92 yards, led four scoring drives, and USF won 30-10. Hartline praised both his arm and his legs afterward, and said the staff will look for more ways to throw the ball.

Van Buren has thrown for 1,273 yards with six touchdowns and zero interceptions, so losing him would matter. But USF’s quarterbacks haven’t thrown a single pick all season, and that care with the football is a big reason this team is 6-2.

Why does the defense matter more here?

South Florida allows 14.5 points per game, the best mark in the American and 10th in the country. Opponents have reached the red zone 20 times and scored only seven touchdowns. C.J. Hicks had four sacks against UAB, tying the school record, and forced two fumbles that teammates returned for touchdowns. This defense also closes: USF has outscored opponents 90-34 in fourth quarters.

East Carolina is a tough offense to trust against that. The Pirates convert 31% of their third downs, 129th in FBS, and they’ve scored touchdowns on only half of their 30 red-zone trips. Mitch Griffis is back as the starter, but he has five interceptions against four touchdowns this season. ECU’s best weapon is running back TJ Engleman Jr., who’s averaging 6.6 yards a carry and has topped 90 yards in six straight games. If the Pirates win this game, Engleman is probably why.

The Pirates also have a habit of fading late. They’ve blown 14-point leads in two overtime losses this season and have been outscored 106-76 after halftime. They start fast, outscoring opponents 52-16 in the first quarter, so don’t panic if USF falls behind early.

So why only a lean?

Because there are real reasons to stay small. USF’s offense ranks 128th in total yards, and its offensive line ranks 108th in line yards, which measures how well blockers open up running lanes. ECU’s defensive front ranks 11th by that same measure and is tied for the conference lead with 21 sacks. If Kromenhoek starts and the Bulls can’t run, they may not have a passing game to fall back on. ECU will also be without safety David Coleman Jr., who broke his fibula when an official slid into him, which helps USF a little. Rain is possible in Greenville, and with a total this low every field goal matters. The models basically call it a coin flip: GordStats has USF by one, and ESPN’s predictor gives ECU a 53% chance to win.

East Carolina has won the last three meetings, but it’s 1-5 against USF at Dowdy-Ficklen. It’s also the Pirates’ Night of the Boneyard, a Paint It Black game, so expect a loud crowd. I still like getting points with the better defense.

Projected final: South Florida 20, East Carolina 17
