No. 24 Arizona is an 8.5-point favorite in most of the market, with the total at 42.5. My play is TCU +8.5.

Four losses, four one-score games. TCU has lost to North Carolina by five, UCF by eight, BYU by seven and West Virginia by four. The Horned Frogs are a frustrating team to back to win outright. They’re a much easier team to back when someone hands them more than a touchdown and asks their defense to do the rest.

The best defense Arizona has seen

Brent Brennan said it himself on Monday: “We’re playing the best defense in the Big 12.” The numbers back him up. TCU allows 14.1 points a game, eighth in FBS, and has given up about one and a half touchdowns a game. Andy Avalos’ unit leads the conference in third-down defense and sits 12th nationally against the pass adjusted for opponents, allowing 6.2 yards per attempt. Safety Jamel Johnson is the tone-setter. “He’s just a total stud,” Brennan said.

That matters because Arizona is a passing team first. Noah Fifita throws for 324 yards a game, sixth in the country. He has 19 touchdowns against four interceptions and owns Arizona’s career touchdown pass record. Isaiah Mizell has become his go-to target, with three straight 100-yard games, including a 94-yard touchdown at Texas Tech. But Arizona hasn’t faced a top-25 pass defense from a Power 4 school this season, per CollegeFFB’s matchup data. And Fifita’s supporting cast is thinner this week. Receiver R.J. Mosley is out after an injury Brennan called “significant,” and Tre Spivey is out for the year.

Can Arizona run it when it needs to?

That was the question after the 34-26 loss at Texas Tech, and Brennan didn’t dodge it. “I think we all think that,” he said when asked whether the ground game has to be better. Kedrick Reescano has seven rushing touchdowns but is averaging 3.6 yards a carry, and TCU ranks eighth in FBS against the run by CollegeFFB’s opponent-adjusted measure. If Arizona can’t lean on the run, the game falls on Fifita’s arm against a secondary that mixes coverages well. Arizona’s line has also allowed 2.75 sacks a game, 116th in the country.

TCU’s offense: yards, not points

This is the part that keeps TCU from being a team you want to back with full confidence. Jaden Craig, a fifth-year transfer from Harvard, has 2,207 passing yards, and the Frogs piled up 484 yards against West Virginia. Then they turned it over three times and lost. Sonny Dykes summed it up: “We’ve gotten beat because, you know why? Because we beat ourselves.” TCU fired offensive line coach A.J. Ricker after that game when the sacks kept piling up, and the Frogs then ground out a 22-16 win over Kansas despite getting outgained by more than 150 yards.

That’s the profile here. TCU doesn’t need to win the yardage battle. It needs to avoid giving away short fields and let a defense that allows just 4.6 second-half points a game (second in FBS) close the door. Jordan Dwyer (12 career 100-yard games) and tight end Kari Ashley give Craig enough targets to move the chains, and punter John Hoyet Chance has dropped half his punts inside the 20.

Where this goes sideways

Arizona is 4-0 at home and has won six straight in Tucson, and the Wildcats are giving away 1,000 tickets to help “Pack the Sol” for a late kickoff. TCU hasn’t played in Tucson since 2003. Arizona has also racked up 25 sacks, 10th nationally, and TCU’s line had allowed 20 through seven games. If the Wildcats win that battle and Craig coughs it up a couple of times, this could turn into a two-touchdown game in a hurry.

Still, TCU’s ceiling for a bad loss has been eight points all year, and the market has already ticked this line down from 9.5. With a total this low, every point of spread is worth more. I’ll take the defense and the extra points.

Projected score: Arizona 23, TCU 17
