Baylor and Auburn square off in the Aflac Kickoff Game in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon. Auburn is a 7 to 7.5-point favorite with a total in the 58.5 to 60.5 range depending on where you look. The value here is on the Bears getting the points.

Alex Golesh coaches his first game as Auburn’s head coach. He came over from South Florida, where he went 9-4 last season, and inherits an Auburn program that has finished under .500 in four straight seasons. Golesh has a reputation for building explosive offenses — his USF teams put up points — but Week 1 with a completely new staff, new scheme, and new personnel dynamics at an SEC program is a totally different assignment than what he was doing in the AAC. First-time head coaches at Power Four programs, in their season debut, on a neutral field, tend to have first-game execution issues that keep games closer than the market expects.

Dave Aranda knows exactly what to do in openers. His Baylor teams are 5-1 straight up in season openers under his leadership. That’s a coach who has consistently had his program ready to compete in Week 1, and it matters even more in a game that’s neutral-site rather than a true home game. Aranda doesn’t have to deal with a hostile road crowd, and his familiar Big 12 approach to offense translates fine to indoor stadium conditions.

The two teams played each other in the 2025 opener in Waco, and Auburn won 38-24. That’s 14 points. Given Auburn was the home team then and Baylor is basically neutral now, the natural adjustment brings that margin down to roughly a touchdown. Which is right where the current line sits. The market has priced this correctly for a neutral-site rematch of two 5-7 teams with new pieces on both sides.

Both teams have significant question marks. Auburn is breaking in a new quarterback under a first-time SEC head coach. Baylor has Sawyer Robertson returning at QB with familiarity with Aranda’s system, but their defense allowed 32.6 points per game last year — one of the worst marks among Power Four programs. It’s easy to see why the market gives Auburn the edge with a more established offensive infrastructure heading in.

But here’s the value angle. Predictive models like Dimers are projecting Auburn to win 30-27 — a three-point Auburn margin. That’s four-plus points less than the current 7-7.5 spread. When the models have the spread that wrong, there’s usually value on the side getting the points, and in this case that’s Baylor.

The Bears are more offensively balanced than their 5-7 record suggests. They scored 31.1 PPG in 2025, which is legitimate offensive production. In a shootout scenario — which is what most projections have this game becoming — Baylor is capable of putting up 27-30 points and staying within a touchdown even if they lose.

I looked at the Over 58.5 too. There’s a real case there given both teams’ offensive production and defensive weaknesses, and the model projections have this game landing around 57 points, which is close to the number. But the total has dipped from 59.5 to 58.5, which suggests some Under money coming in. The side has cleaner pricing given how much the models disagree with the market on the margin.

The Pick: Baylor Bears +7.5
