Washington is a 26.5-point home favorite over Utah State with a total of 55.5. My play is the Under.

Both teams played offensively brutal games in Week 1. Washington beat Washington State 10-7 in the Apple Cup. That’s a rivalry game between two teams that combined for just 17 points across four quarters. Jedd Fisch’s defense played well, but his offense couldn’t sustain drives and barely scraped past a Cougars team that was integrating brand-new coaching pieces. Utah State lost 29-17 at home to Idaho State, an FCS opponent that Utah State was expected to beat comfortably. The Aggies scored 17 points — that’s a low output against FCS talent, and it’s a real red flag for their offensive rhythm heading into a Power Four road game.

Combined Week 1 output: 27 points. Total for this game: 55.5. The math doesn’t work.

Washington’s offense hasn’t shown it can score in bunches this year. They put up 10 points in a game where their defense held Washington State to 7. That’s a Fisch team that’s built to win with defense and ball control, not by scoring 35+. When your offensive philosophy is grinding it out, your totals tend to stay lower than the spread suggests they should. Even against an inferior opponent, Washington will run the ball, drain clock, and settle for field goals rather than pushing tempo.

Utah State’s offense is worse. They lost their offensive coordinator (Kevin McGiven, who took the Utah job), and the new play-caller is installing a system from scratch. Their new starting quarterback also isn’t clicking yet — 17 points against FCS defensive competition doesn’t suggest a group ready to explode against a ranked Big Ten defense. Bronco Mendenhall’s team will be conservative and try to keep the game close by playing possession football. That approach limits total points.

The situational factors also favor the Under. When a home favorite is expected to win by 25+ against a rebuilding opponent, the game script usually goes: build a big lead early, pull starters in the third quarter, backups grind out the fourth quarter with running plays. That’s a Under-friendly script. Washington’s coaching staff won’t want to expose backups to injury or risk in a fourth quarter where the game is decided. Fisch is going to pull starters as soon as the lead gets to 20+ points, and the score will slow to a crawl in the second half.

Realistic outcomes: Washington 27, Utah State 13 (40 total); Washington 31, Utah State 10 (41 total); Washington 34, Utah State 14 (48 total); Washington 24, Utah State 10 (34 total). All comfortably Under 55.5. For the Over to hit, we need Washington to score 35+ and Utah State to score 20+, which contradicts everything both teams showed in Week 1.

I considered the side. Utah State +26.5 has legitimate value given their 8-1 ATS record as underdogs and 6-2 ATS after losses. But laying that many points against a Fisch team that plays grinding, defensive football feels like exactly the profile of a spread that pushes or backdoor covers rather than blows out. The total is the cleaner read.

The Pick: Utah State/Washington Under 55.5
