Houston is a 51.5-point home favorite over Southern University with a total of 60.5. My play is the Under.
Two things point me here. Houston’s defensive identity and Willie Fritz’s coaching approach in blowout spots.
Houston just held Oregon State to 26 rushing yards in Week 1. Twenty-six. Against a Power Four team with legitimate playmakers. The Cougars added four sacks and controlled the line of scrimmage from the opening kickoff, building a 19-7 halftime lead and never surrendering it. That’s a defense that stops offenses cold and doesn’t allow explosive plays. Against Southern’s FCS offense, which averaged 25 points per game across its first two games, the Cougars should be able to hold them to under 14 points — probably closer to 7-10.
Fritz is the second piece. He’s a conservative coach who wins by grinding, controlling clock, and playing complementary football. He isn’t a coach who runs up scores or leaves starters on the field in blowouts. His entire game plan is built around efficiency, not explosive offensive numbers. When Houston builds a 28-3 lead in the third quarter, John Mateer and the starters come out. The Cougars run out the clock with second-string players who don’t push tempo.
Then there’s the schedule. Houston plays at Texas Tech next Saturday. That’s a legitimate Big 12 road opener with real ranking implications. Fritz is going to want to preserve his roster, especially at quarterback and along the offensive and defensive lines, for that game. He isn’t going to expose starters to injury in a Week 2 game where he’s already up four touchdowns.
That coaching philosophy directly suppresses total points. When Houston builds a big lead, they’ll grind out drives with the run game, milk the play clock, and settle for punts or field goals rather than pushing for touchdowns. Southern’s offense, meanwhile, will be facing Houston’s second and third-string defense in the fourth quarter — but Houston’s backup defenders are still recruited at a level that Southern’s offense will struggle against.
Realistic scores in this game: Houston 45, Southern 7 (52 total); Houston 42, Southern 10 (52 total); Houston 38, Southern 3 (41 total); or Houston 49, Southern 14 (63 total). Three of four scenarios comfortably under. Only a game where Houston really lets loose puts us over the total, and that’s specifically the game script Fritz avoids in these spots.
The 60.5 total assumes Houston scores in the mid-50s. That’s a Willie Fritz team playing a Willie Fritz game plan. It’s the wrong assumption.
