Utah State Aggies at Utah Utes

Utah is a 27.5-point home favorite over Utah State in the Beehive Boot rivalry with a total of 56.5. My play is the Aggies getting the points.
Rivalry games have a specific dynamic that big spreads consistently miss. The Beehive Boot is Utah State’s biggest game of the year regardless of records or rankings. Bronco Mendenhall’s team will show up ready to compete, even at 0-2 and heavy road underdogs. That’s the profile of a rivalry underdog that keeps games closer than the market prices in.
Bronco Mendenhall is also a specific type of coach for this exact situation. His career at Virginia and BYU was built around defense, discipline, and clock control. He coaches teams that don’t beat themselves and don’t get blown out even when they’re facing more talented opponents. Utah State’s 29-17 home loss to Idaho State was a bad result, but it doesn’t reflect a talent gap that suddenly becomes 27.5 points wider when Utah becomes the opponent.
The Utah offense hasn’t shown it can consistently run up scores against defenses playing conservative football. Yes, Utah scored 66 against Idaho — but that was against an FCS opponent that couldn’t tackle. In their other games, Utah has shown a more measured offensive approach under first-year head coach Morgan Scalley. Scalley took over after Kyle Whittingham left for Michigan and installed a more conservative offensive system while integrating pieces from his defensive background. His playbook doesn’t emphasize running up scores — it emphasizes winning games efficiently.
Look at Scalley’s likely game script. Utah is favored by 27.5 in an in-state rivalry. If they build a 24-3 lead by halftime, Scalley will manage the second half by running the clock, calling conservative plays, and rotating in backups by the fourth quarter. That means Utah State can put together garbage-time drives against second-string Utah defenders and add points that push the total under while covering the spread on the underdog side.
There’s also the Kevin McGiven factor. Utah’s new offensive coordinator came directly from Utah State this offseason. Both teams’ offenses will have similar tendencies, similar play calls, and similar tempo. That familiarity works in Utah State’s favor defensively — Mendenhall’s defense knows exactly what Utah wants to run, and the coordinator on the other sideline just left. That specific edge matters.
Realistic outcomes: Utah 34, Utah State 14 (20-point margin, Utah State covers +27.5); Utah 38, Utah State 17 (21 points, Utah State covers); Utah 42, Utah State 20 (22 points, Utah State covers); or Utah 45, Utah State 17 (28 points, Utah doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for the Aggies. For Utah to lay 27.5, they need to win by 28+, which requires them to keep the offensive foot on the accelerator into the fourth quarter — something Scalley’s coaching profile doesn’t support.
The Beehive Boot rivalry has produced closer games than the market consistently expects. That’s a pattern that shows up regardless of specific rosters. Getting 27.5 in this exact spot is real value.
The Pick: Utah State Aggies +27.5
