BYU is a 17.5-point road favorite over Colorado State with a total of 52.5. My play is the Rams getting the points at home.
Colorado State’s ATS profile is the entry point here. The Rams are 2-0 against the spread this season with a 91.74% ROI on side bets. They’re 2-0 to the Over as well. That’s a perfect covering record through two games, indicating a program that’s playing at a higher level than the market expected coming into the season. When a team is undefeated ATS in exactly this profile (home underdog getting a big number), fading them typically ends badly.
Now consider the specific setup. This is BYU’s first road game of the season. The Cougars have looked dominant at home in Provo through two weeks, but road trips to Mountain West venues in early September carry different challenges. Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins isn’t LaVell Edwards Stadium — the elevation is different, the crowd feels different, and BYU’s players don’t have the muscle memory of playing in that specific environment. Even elite programs typically underperform their spread expectations on their first road game of the season.
Colorado State also has motivation working in their favor. This is their first shot at a ranked opponent in 2026, and their home crowd will show up in full force. Programs from the Mountain West level don’t get many chances to prove themselves against Big 12 competition, and when they do, they typically play their best football. Add in the fact that the Rams’ offense has clicked at a high level through two games (2-0 to the Over), and you have a home team that will score points and keep the game competitive.
BYU’s roster has real strengths. LJ Martin is one of the best running backs in the country — averaging 8.2 yards per carry through two games. But even with that rushing production, BYU’s 17.5-point spread requires them to dominate the entire game and pull away by three touchdowns. Against a Rams defense that has been solid through two weeks, that’s asking a lot.
The Rams’ offense also has enough firepower to keep this from becoming a runaway. Their 2-0 to the Over record shows they can put up points, and the fact that they’ve been able to score against real competition through two games gives them the ability to hang with BYU. If they score 20+ points, BYU has to score 38+ to cover — which is a lot for a road team playing their first real away game of the season.
Realistic outcomes: BYU 31, CSU 20 (11-point margin, CSU covers +17.5); BYU 34, CSU 21 (13-point margin, CSU covers); BYU 38, CSU 24 (14-point margin, CSU covers by 3.5); or BYU 45, CSU 17 (28-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover, and given Colorado State’s perfect ATS record and BYU’s first road test, that’s the more likely outcome distribution.
