Texas Tech at Cincinnati
Saturday, October 24, 2026
12:00 PM ET, Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati, OH

Texas Tech is a 10.5-point road favorite over Cincinnati with a total of 56.5. My play is Texas Tech -10.5.

Cincinnati wants this one badly. This offseason, Scott Satterfield accused Texas Tech of tampering with his quarterback, Brendan Sorsby, after Sorsby landed in Lubbock through the transfer portal. Then the NCAA banned Sorsby in May for gambling violations, and the whole fight became moot. The grudge didn’t. Wanting it and stopping the Red Raiders are two different things, though, and Cincinnati’s defense has given me no reason to think it can do the second part.

Texas Tech has gone 18-2 since the start of last season, and 17 of those wins came by double digits. Let that sink in before you grab the points.

The Bearcats’ defense is waving a white flag on third down

Cincinnati has allowed 1,120 yards in its last two games, a 34-7 loss at Arizona and a 45-42 loss at West Virginia that ended on a field goal as time expired. The Mountaineers set up that kick with a 41-yard completion on third-and-9. That play is the Bearcats’ season in miniature. They rank 127th nationally in third-down defense, letting opponents convert nearly half the time, and the advanced numbers are even uglier, with this defense ranking near the bottom of the country on those downs.

“Didn’t tackle well. Our pass defense was not great,” Satterfield said after Morgantown. He’s being kind. Cincinnati gives up a big chunk of the field on almost every drive and ranks outside the top 110 in down-to-down efficiency allowed.

Texas Tech just found its gear. The Red Raiders put 404 yards on Arizona State in the first half alone, their biggest half since Patrick Mahomes was taking snaps in 2016, and won 53-25. J’Koby Williams needed only 11 carries for 165 yards, with touchdown runs of 62 and 38 yards. Will Hammond isn’t putting up video-game passing numbers, but he’s 6-0 as this season’s starter and has been well protected behind a veteran line that has allowed just eight sacks.

Cincinnati’s best weapon runs straight into a wall

The Bearcats’ offense is legit. They run for 231 yards a game, Cole Tabb is averaging 9.1 yards a carry with eight rushing touchdowns, and JC French hasn’t thrown an interception all season. They’re the best team in the country at converting third downs.

The problem is the matchup. Texas Tech allows 82 rushing yards a game, fifth-best in the nation, and it’s even better by efficiency, top 10 at stopping runs from getting positive yards. Cincinnati runs the ball on roughly six of every ten plays. Take that away, and French has to win from long third downs against a defense that’s been getting stronger. Over the last three games, the Red Raiders’ defense has been nearly twice as stingy per play as its season average. It also creates chaos: 12 takeaways and four defensive touchdowns, tied with Alabama for the most in the country.

The red-zone problem I can’t ignore

Texas Tech’s red-zone offense is the soft spot. The Red Raiders rank among the worst in the country at turning trips inside the 20 into touchdowns by efficiency, and field goals are how 10.5-point favorites end up winning by seven. Cincinnati is 3-1 against the spread at home, it’s the 100th Homecoming at Nippert, and an offense this good on third down can drag out drives and keep the score close. Texas Tech also needed everything to beat Houston 28-26 at home. I’d play this up to -11.5, where it opened, and pass at -12 or higher.

Projected score: Texas Tech 34, Cincinnati 20. The Bearcats score some points through the air, but they can’t run on this defense, and they can’t get Texas Tech off the field.

The Pick: Texas Tech -10.5
