James Madison is a 14.5-point favorite at Southern Miss with a total of 58.5 at most books. My play is James Madison -14.5 (-110).

Billy Napier didn’t hide from it. After James Madison coughed up the ball five times in a 24-21 overtime loss to Troy, the first-year Dukes coach said, “Look, it’s shocking to me that we would be that careless with the ball.” Then he added the part coaches usually skip: “But it’s my responsibility. You gotta own it.”

That loss was the second straight overtime defeat for a team that started 7-0, and it’s exactly why I like the Dukes on Thursday night. Bettors remember the last two weeks. The full nine-game body of work says this is still one of the best Group of Five teams in the country, and Southern Miss is a bad matchup for the team across the field.

The turnovers look like noise. During the 7-0 start, JMU threw one interception. In the last two games it has thrown four. Against Troy the Dukes gained 408 yards and led 21-7 at halftime before the giveaways piled up. Teams that win the yardage battle and lose on turnovers tend to be worth backing the following week, and JMU still scores 39.1 points per game while allowing 18.9.

Southern Miss can’t throw its way back into games. This is the matchup that matters most. Southern Miss ranks 130th in passing efficiency by opponent-adjusted expected points, and its third-down conversion rate of 31% sits 133rd. Coach Blake Anderson was blunt about quarterback Landry Lyddy after an earlier game: “Way too many force throws downfield. We can’t panic.” Lyddy has 1,326 yards with eight touchdowns and four picks. Now he gets a JMU defense that ranks eighth in the country at preventing explosive plays. If the Golden Eagles can’t hit big shots and can’t convert on third down, they have to put together 10-play drives against a defense that rarely allows them.

JMU gets ahead early. The Dukes average 24.7 first-half points, fourth in the nation. Southern Miss allows 17.4 points before halftime, 125th, and averages 2.1 points in the first quarter, 135th. That’s an ugly combination for a home underdog. Falling behind by two scores at halftime forces Lyddy into exactly the kind of throws his coach is worried about.

The trenches favor the road team, even without its star back. George Pettaway, the Sun Belt’s leading rusher with 824 yards at 6.6 per carry, missed the Troy game with what looked like a hamstring injury, and his status for Thursday is unclear. JMU didn’t miss a beat on the ground without him: Seth Cromwell carried 23 times for 135 yards. Southern Miss has allowed 223.4 rushing yards per game, and its defensive front ranks 130th in line yards, a stat that measures how much push the big guys up front get. JMU’s offensive line ranks 41st. Whoever gets the carries should find room.

The schedule helps, too. Southern Miss beat ULM 35-21 on Saturday, its second straight win, and now has five days to turn around for a Thursday night game. JMU played last Thursday and gets a full week. Anderson says his team will try to be “fresh and pissed off on Thursday night.” I’ll buy the second part. The first is harder on five days of rest.

Where this bet goes wrong. JMU’s late-game problems aren’t brand new. The Dukes haven’t won an overtime game since moving to FBS, and they have let two-score leads slip away in five of their last six Sun Belt losses. If they lead by 17 in the fourth quarter and get sloppy again, a backdoor cover is in play. JMU won the last meeting 32-15 in 2024, and a Thursday night crowd at the newly renamed Renasant Stadium, formerly known as The Rock, will be loud. The market has also moved a point toward Southern Miss since opening at 15.5.

The bottom line. The models are on board: GordStats has JMU by 15.3, and another model lands at 16.5. I’ll take the better team on full rest against a passing game that can’t stretch the field.

Score prediction: James Madison 37, Southern Miss 17

The Pick: James Madison -14.5
