Ball State Cardinals at UMass Minutemen

UMass is a 3.5-point favorite at most books with a total of 49.5, and my play is UMass -3.5.
The most useful scouting report on this game came from the guy coaching against UMass. “We’re not playing the team that’s lost four games in a row,” Ball State’s Mike Uremovich said last week. “We’re playing the team that’s won four games in a row, and they’ll be ready.”
He’s right, and the market hasn’t fully caught up to it.
Two seasons in one. UMass opened 2026 by shocking Rutgers, then rolled through two FCS opponents and blasted Sacramento State 35-6. Then October hit, and the Minutemen lost four straight while scoring fewer than 20 points in each one. The key detail is that quarterback William “Pop” Watson III missed the losses to Buffalo and Miami (Ohio) with a lower-body injury. With Watson running the show, this offense scored 35 or more in all four wins.
Uremovich didn’t hold back on him: “He might be the best player in the league, just in terms of what he means to them offensively.” Watson is completing 69.6% of his passes with eight touchdowns and two picks, and he’s the point guard of a read-option and RPO offense that leans on two-tight-end sets that, as Uremovich noted, not many college teams still use.
Ball State’s defense is the problem. The Cardinals have won two straight, a 32-31 overtime escape at Bowling Green and a 34-17 handling of Sacramento State, and give them credit. But this is still a defense allowing 35.3 points and nearly 423 yards a game, which ranks near the bottom of the FBS. They’ve given up more than 25 points in every game except their win over FCS Stony Brook. A defense like that is a bad match for an offense built on misdirection and quarterback reads. That’s exactly what UMass runs, and one missed contain turns into a 50-yard Watson run.

The UMass defense travels. Even during the skid, the Minutemen haven’t allowed 400 yards in any game, and they’re giving up 21.1 points per game, which ranks in the top 40 nationally. Uremovich called their front seven “big and physical” and pointed out they’re among the best in the country at forcing turnovers. Keldric Luster has thrown for 1,300 yards and nine touchdowns, but also six interceptions. Ball State wants to run with TJ Horton, who has nine rushing touchdowns, and set up Luster’s deep shots. Against a front that gets downhill, that plan gets a lot harder if Ball State falls behind early.
The rest is a wash. Both teams are coming off extra time. Ball State used a 10-day break to get healthy, and UMass hasn’t played since its Oct. 23 loss at UConn. That makes the rest edge a non-factor, though Ball State does have a long flight to Amherst for a Wednesday night kickoff. Special teams lean UMass, with kicker Derek Morris having hit from 56 this season.
Where this goes sideways. Watson is still listed as questionable on the latest injury report, and the whole case depends on him. If he’s out or limited, UMass goes back to the offense that couldn’t crack 20 in October, and I’d want no part of laying points. Ball State’s offense is also good enough to win a shootout. Six of the Cardinals’ eight games have gone over the total, and Luster’s deep ball has been sharp lately. The spread is also sitting right around the key number of 3, so check before you bet. UMass -3 is a better bet than -3.5, and I’d stop at -4.
If Watson takes the first snap, I like UMass to win by about a touchdown and end the skid.
Projected score: UMass 30, Ball State 21
The Pick: UMass -3.5
