Baylor at UCF
Friday, October 30, 2026
7:30 PM ET, Acrisure Bounce House
UCF is a 1.5-point home favorite over Baylor, and the total is 47.5. My play is Baylor +1.5 (-110).
Six days. That’s how long UCF gets to come down from the biggest night in program history before it has to do it all again. Saturday the Knights beat No. 2 BYU 39-31 in double overtime, their first win ever over an AP top-five team. Friday they host a Baylor team that just fired its head coach, and that’s exactly the kind of opponent that ruins a hangover.
Baylor blew it up on Sunday. Dave Aranda is gone after a 25-24 loss at Kansas that summed up the season. Kansas blocked three Baylor field goals, the last a 45-yard try with 22 seconds left that would have won it. It was Kansas’ first win over Baylor since 2007, and it dropped the Bears to 4-3. Defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman takes over for the rest of the year and keeps calling the defense. His message to the players: “I want to take the pressure off of you. I wanna let you guys play free.” Interim coaches on a short week don’t reinvent anything. They simplify. Klanderman has already said he wants to do that up front, and for this offense that’s no bad thing.
The defense is the real deal. Klanderman came over from Kansas State this year, and before that he helped North Dakota State win four straight national titles. He took a unit that allowed 32.6 points a game last season and turned it into one of the nastiest in the country. Baylor is third nationally with 3.86 sacks a game, and it ranks 15th in EPA allowed per play, which measures how much damage an offense does on each snap. Baylor held each of its first six opponents to 20 points or fewer. That defense isn’t changing hands. It’s being promoted.
Where UCF’s dream week turns into a problem
Keyone Jenkins has been terrific since taking over for the injured Alonza Barnett III. He threw for 293 yards and three scores against BYU, added a rushing TD and didn’t turn it over. Scott Frost is sticking with the hot hand, and I would too. The problem is what’s around him. UCF can’t run the ball against real defenses. Against FBS opponents the Knights rank 116th in EPA per rush, and Baylor is 19th at stopping the run. That puts the whole game on Jenkins’ arm against a pass rush that drops the quarterback on more than 9% of pass attempts, 11th in the country. When drives keep landing on 2nd-and-9, mistakes follow.

Gavin Freeman gets a soft secondary
Baylor’s offense has been ugly, no sugarcoating it. DJ Lagway has been fighting a high ankle sprain since the opener and is completing about 52% of his throws. The run game ranks 130th in EPA per carry, which is a polite way of saying it doesn’t exist. But this is the one week the matchup bends Baylor’s way. UCF’s pass defense ranks 95th in EPA allowed per dropback, and opponents convert 43.5% of their third downs against it. The Knights’ pass rush ranks 110th in sack rate, so a hobbled Lagway should finally get time to stand in the pocket and let it rip.
That’s where Gavin Freeman comes in. He’s third in the country in catches per game and already has four 100-yard days. Baylor throws more than 40 times a game, and against this secondary all that volume finally has somewhere to go.
The hidden yards favor the Bears. Baylor ranks 20th in net starting field position, while UCF is 91st. Punter Palmer Williams is second nationally in average, and ESPN’s FPI rates Baylor’s special teams seventh in the country, blocked-kick fiasco and all. In a game the market prices as a coin flip, a few free yards on every drive add up. Yes, UCF beat TCU 21-13 while Baylor lost to the Horned Frogs 17-6. But over the full season these two grade out almost identically on a per-play basis. The tiebreaker is spot, and the spot screams letdown.
The case against the Bears
Baylor’s offense could just stay broken. The Bears rank 117th in EPA per play and 116th in red-zone scoring, and they average nearly eight penalties a game. A coaching change can just as easily mean chaos as a jolt. Lagway’s ankle is a week-to-week story, and neither team’s official availability report was out when this was written. If Barnett is healthy, UCF has a second capable quarterback to turn to. And this UCF team has covered five of its seven games, including a 15.5-point cover as a home dog against BYU. Check the number before kickoff: the moneyline has drifted toward Baylor since opening, and the total has fallen from 49.5.
How Friday night ends
Baylor’s defense owns the line of scrimmage, Freeman finds the soft spots, and UCF’s big-night glow fades a little in the second half. Projected score: Baylor 24, UCF 20.
The Pick: Baylor +1.5 (-110)
