Central Michigan Chippewas vs Eastern Michigan Eagles
Wednesday, November 4, 2026
7:30 PM ET, Ford Field, Detroit
Eastern Michigan is a 1.5-point favorite at most books with a total of 44.5, and my play is Over 44.5.
The last time these two met at Ford Field, on Nov. 6, 2004, Eastern Michigan won 61-58 in four overtimes. I’m not calling for a rerun of that one. I just think the market has this 104th meeting priced like a grinder, and the matchup data says it shouldn’t be.
Start with the stakes, because both teams are desperate. “For both programs, it’s a must-win game,” Central Michigan coach Matt Drinkall said this week. His Chippewas are 3-5 and have dropped three straight, the latest a 28-27 gut-punch at home to Miami (Ohio) on a touchdown with 1:41 left. Eastern Michigan, the designated home team in Detroit this year, is 4-5 after losses to Toledo and Ohio. The Eagles’ bowl hopes are fading, and so are Central’s. That’s usually when teams stop playing scared and start taking shots.
Who’s actually going to stop anybody?
This is where the total looks too low to me. Use the opponent-adjusted numbers from CollegeFootballData, and both defenses rank in the bottom quarter of the country in success rate allowed. In other words, both teams let offenses stay on schedule.
Eastern Michigan’s pass defense ranks 134th in EPA allowed per dropback, which is about as generous as it gets in the FBS. That matters more this week than it would have a month ago. Central Michigan used to be a run-first team with Angel Flores, but Flores suffered a season-ending injury, and Jadyn Glasser has brought balance. In his first start, Glasser went 18-of-31 for 221 yards and a touchdown against a good Miami defense, which was a season high for CMU through the air. Drinkall said the two quarterbacks are “as opposite as you could possibly be.”

Now flip it. Seventh-year quarterback Noah Kim ranks second in the MAC in passing yards for Eastern Michigan, and he gets a Central Michigan defense that has struggled up front. The Chippewas rank 138th in line yards allowed, meaning runners are getting a push before anyone touches them. They also rank 136th in third-down defense, allowing a 51% conversion rate. Drives that should stall keep going.
Add a fast indoor track with no wind or weather, and I think both offenses top what the market expects. A neutral model at GordStats lands at 46.
What keeps me from loving it
The pace is the biggest worry. Central Michigan runs only about 60 plays a game, one of the slowest rates in the country, and a short-clock game can starve any Over. The Chippewas will also be without wide receiver Langston Lewis, who has been suspended for a violation of team rules after a 10-catch, 163-yard game against Miami. That takes Glasser’s best target off the field. Eastern Michigan ranks third in the MAC against the run, so if both coaches go conservative in a must-win game, this could look a lot like last year’s 24-13 Central win.
That’s why I’d call this a lean, not a lock. I’d play it up to 45.5 and stop there.
Projected score: Eastern Michigan 27, Central Michigan 24
