Ohio State is a 27.5-point home favorite over Illinois in the Battle for the Illibuck with a total of 52.5. My play is the Fighting Illini getting the points.

The recent head-to-head history is where I start. Ohio State beat Illinois 34-16 in Columbus last October. That was an 18-point margin at Ohio State’s home stadium. If the Buckeyes were 18 points better than Illinois a year ago, translating that to a 28+ point margin now assumes both programs have moved in very different directions — Ohio State getting significantly better and Illinois getting significantly worse. Neither is clearly true based on how these teams have played through three games in 2026.

Ohio State’s Week 2 loss to Texas is worth examining. The Buckeyes fell 24-23 in Austin, which means their offense produced just 23 points against a legitimate top-15 defense. That’s not a red flag for their season, but it’s a specific data point that shows Ohio State can be limited when facing a competent opponent. Illinois’s defense isn’t at Texas’s level, but they’re better than Ball State or Kent State — the two FCS-caliber opponents Ohio State ran up scores against for their 3-0 ATS record.

Ryan Day’s coaching profile also matters. Day has historically been cautious about running up scores against Big Ten opponents when Ohio State has key games coming up on the schedule. The Buckeyes have Michigan on November 28 and playoff implications throughout October and November. Day will manage this game to win, not to blow out an in-state rival. Once Ohio State builds a 24-10 lead by halftime, expect them to slow the tempo, run the ball with backup running backs, and grind out the clock rather than pushing for 42+ points.

Illinois has a specific offensive profile that keeps them in games. They’ve hit the Over in all three of their 2026 games. That’s a program with a productive offense that can move the ball against real defenses — Duke’s defense held them competitive, and their 42-23 win over UAB showed they can score. Against Ohio State, Illinois will find some opportunities to score, especially through Bret Bielema’s play-action passing game and their downfield weapons. If they can put up 17-21 points, and Ohio State scores in the 34-42 range (their most likely output range given Day’s coaching pattern in these spots), we’re looking at a game decided by 18-25 points — inside the 27.5 spread.

The market has also inflated the spread. The line opened at 26.5 and has moved up to 27.5 — a full point of public money on Ohio State. When a spread moves toward the favorite by that much in a rivalry game, that inflation typically creates value on the underdog side.

Realistic outcomes: Ohio State 38, Illinois 14 (24-point margin, Illinois covers +27.5); Ohio State 34, Illinois 17 (17-point margin, covers by 10.5); Ohio State 42, Illinois 17 (25-point margin, covers by 2.5); or Ohio State 45, Illinois 10 (35-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Illinois.

The Pick: Illinois Fighting Illini +27.5
