Texas Longhorns at Tennessee Volunteers
Saturday, September 26, 2026
12:00 PM ET, Neyland Stadium

Texas is a 5.5-point road favorite over Tennessee with a total of 55.5. My play is the Volunteers getting the points.

The line movement here is significant. This game opened at Texas -7, and the market has moved all the way down to -5.5 (with some books offering -4.5). That’s a full 1.5-to-2.5 point swing toward Tennessee — the kind of movement that usually signals sharp money identifying value on the underdog side.

Neyland Stadium is the reason. When Tennessee plays at home in a night game with a top-15 ranking against a top-10 opponent, they typically overperform against the spread. The atmosphere is one of the loudest in college football, and Josh Heupel’s team plays at a high level when the crowd is behind them. That home-field advantage is the specific reason the line has moved toward the Vols.

Tennessee’s offense has been rolling. They’ve scored 42+ points in each of their first three games and rank 18th in the nation in yards per play at 6.6. Faizon Brandon has looked like a true dual-threat quarterback capable of hitting downfield throws and extending plays with his legs. Against a Texas defense that just gave up 23 points to Ohio State (a game Texas won 24-23), Tennessee should be able to match or come close to matching Texas’s offensive production.

The red zone efficiency numbers matter here. Tennessee is 100% in the red zone through three games — every single trip has resulted in points. Texas is at 87.5%. That’s a specific advantage for the Vols when the game gets tight in the fourth quarter. A field goal here or there matters in a game with a 5.5-point spread.

Steve Sarkisian’s ATS profile as a road favorite at Texas has been mixed. He’s 4-5 against the spread against ranked opponents. His teams don’t consistently cover big spreads on the road, and 5.5 in a hostile SEC environment against a top-15 team is more than the market typically prices for these matchups. Texas’s 4-6 ATS record in their last 10 road openers reinforces that this specific setup hasn’t been a strong covering spot for them.

The Ohio State-Texas game from earlier this season is worth remembering. Texas won 24-23. That was a 1-point margin against a top-5 team. If Texas is only a 1-point better than Ohio State, translating that to a 5.5+ point margin over Tennessee at their own stadium is a stretch. Realistic outcomes suggest a much closer game.

Realistic scores: Texas 28, Tennessee 24 (4-point margin, Vols cover +5.5); Tennessee 27, Texas 24 (Vols win outright); Texas 31, Tennessee 27 (4-point margin, covers by 1.5); or Texas 34, Tennessee 24 (10-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Tennessee, and given the line movement and home-field advantage, that’s the more likely outcome distribution.

The Pick: Tennessee Volunteers +5.5
