Texas Tech is a 34.5-point home favorite over Sam Houston with a total of 55.5. My play is the Bearkats getting the massive number of points.
Laying 34.5 in any football game is a tough spot. Even in the biggest talent mismatches, backdoor covers are common because the coaching factor kicks in. Texas Tech just came off a signature 28-26 home win over No. 22 Houston last week — that was a game where the Red Raiders needed a two-point conversion stop in the final minute to seal the victory. Their next games include heavy Big 12 conference play with real playoff implications. Head coach Joey McGuire is going to want to keep his players healthy and rested for those matchups.
That’s the profile of a coach who pulls his starters early in blowouts. If Texas Tech builds a 28-7 lead by halftime (which is likely given the talent gap), Behren Morton and the top skill players will be watching the second half from the sideline. Backup rotations grinding out the clock in the fourth quarter produce closer margins than the market prices in.
Sam Houston isn’t a bad Group of Five team. They’re 1-2 heading into this game but have shown some offensive capability. Their program has legitimate FBS talent even if they can’t match Texas Tech’s roster depth. Against Red Raider backups in the fourth quarter, Sam Houston should be able to score 14-17 points regardless of the game state.
Texas Tech’s own offensive limitations against elite competition also worth noting. They only put up 28 points against Houston. Given they’ll be playing conservatively with a big lead by the second half, expect the Red Raiders’ output to cap around 42-48 points. That’s a big number, but 34.5 requires them to reach 49+ while holding Sam Houston to 14 or fewer.
Realistic outcomes: Texas Tech 42, Sam Houston 13 (29-point margin, Sam Houston covers +34.5); Texas Tech 45, Sam Houston 14 (31-point margin, covers by 3.5); Texas Tech 38, Sam Houston 10 (28-point margin, covers by 6.5); or Texas Tech 52, Sam Houston 7 (45-point margin, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover for Sam Houston. Only if Texas Tech decides to run up the score and Sam Houston’s offense gets completely shut down does the spread cover, and neither of those outcomes is particularly likely given the coaching context.
The pattern of Group of Five teams covering huge spreads against Big 12 programs has been consistent this season. Programs like this have been finding ways to score late touchdowns and keep games within the double digits even when they’re overmatched on paper. Sam Houston will have their opportunities.
The Pick: Sam Houston Bearkats +34.5
