Appalachian State opens the season Saturday afternoon as an 18.5-point favorite over Maine with a total around 52. The value here is on the FCS road dog getting the points.

App State isn’t the App State of five years ago. The Mountaineers finished 5-8 last season, went 3-3 at home, and finished 6th in the Sun Belt East. That’s a program that has moved from the giant-killer identity that made them famous with wins over Michigan and other Power Four programs to a middle-of-the-pack Sun Belt team fighting to get back to bowl eligibility. When a program with that recent track record is asked to cover nearly three touchdowns against an FCS opponent in Week 1, the historical precedents don’t support it.

Now the FCS opponent piece.

Maine went 6-6 in 2025 in the Colonial Athletic Association. They’re not a dominant FCS team — they finished 6th in their conference — but they’re also not a bottom-of-the-barrel program either. They scored 24 points per game last year and gave up 24. That’s a team that plays close games and doesn’t get blown out. FCS teams that play close games at their own level tend to keep it within three touchdowns against mid-tier FBS opponents, especially in Week 1 when everyone is still shaking off rust and installing new pieces.

The App State offense scored 30 points per game in 2025, but they gave up 24 points per game as well. That’s a defense that has holes. Maine has enough offensive weapons to score 14-17 points against a defense that struggled to slow down Sun Belt opponents throughout last year. If Maine hangs 17 and App State scores in the low-30s, we get a final around 34-17. That falls inside the 18.5 spread.

App State also has a full home Sun Belt schedule coming up plus a road trip to NC State in Week 4. This isn’t the kind of game where they’ll be pushing to run up the score and expose their playbook. Their coaching staff will likely pull starters early if they build a comfortable lead, and their backup offense isn’t going to run up the score against Maine’s FCS defense.

The 18.5 point spread would require App State to win by 19+. Given their 5-8 record last year, their inconsistent home performance (3-3), and their offense-defense balance issues, that’s a lot to ask in a season opener. More realistic App State outcomes are winning by 14 to 17 points — right in the sweet spot for Maine to cover.

I looked at the total. The 51.5-53.5 range is defensible given both teams have offensive capability but neither has an elite defense. There’s a case for the Over. But the side has clearer value given App State’s inability to blow out opponents consistently last year.

The Pick: Maine Black Bears +18.5
