Miami is a 22.5-point road favorite over Wake Forest with a total of 55.5. My play is the Over.

The total is the entry point here. It opened at 50.5 and has moved up to 55.5. That’s a five-point move on the Over side — significant action indicating both public and sharp money see this game as higher-scoring than the initial number. When a total moves five points in one direction before kickoff, the market is telling you something specific about how these teams will play together.

Miami’s offense is the biggest reason for that movement. Darian Mensah made his Hurricanes debut by throwing for 401 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-6 win over Stanford. He set the Miami single-game passing record in less than three quarters of work. He’s currently the outright Heisman Trophy favorite at +550. That’s not a young quarterback finding his footing — that’s a program’s franchise quarterback playing at an All-American level from Week 1 forward. Against a Wake Forest defense that has real questions, Mensah should be able to move the ball at will.

Wake Forest, meanwhile, is 2-0 and just beat Purdue on the road last week. That result matters. A Group of Five-caliber team can pull off an ACC road upset when playing at their level, but it also shows they can score points against Power Four defenses. If Wake Forest can put up 20+ points against Purdue’s defense, they should be able to score 17-24 against Miami — especially playing at home with the crowd behind them.

The math on 55.5 is very approachable. Miami’s offensive floor over the first two weeks has been around 45 points. Against Wake Forest at home, they should hit that same range even accounting for some conservative playcalling in the second half. If Miami scores 45 and Wake Forest counters with 17-21, we’re at 62-66 total points — comfortably over 55.5.

Even more conservative scenarios work. If Miami scores 38 (a low estimate given their offensive weapons) and Wake Forest scores 20 (a reasonable home total against a team with defensive holes), we’re at 58 — still over. Miami 42-14 = 56 (over by 0.5). Only if Miami plays extremely conservatively AND Wake Forest gets shut down would the total stay under.

The Wake Forest schedule situation actually helps the Over case too. The Demon Deacons are on a short week (six days between games). That fatigue factor tends to affect defenses more than offenses, since defensive rotations are physically taxed and pass rush becomes less consistent. A tired Wake Forest defense means more clean pockets for Mensah, which means more scoring drives.

Miami also has an important game coming up. They travel to Florida State on September 26 — a top-15 ACC matchup with real playoff implications. Head coach Mario Cristobal wants his team playing at a high level heading into that game, which means keeping the offense aggressive and letting Mensah continue to build his rhythm.

I considered the side. Miami -22.5 has support from the massive talent gap and Miami’s home-and-neutral field performance so far, but 22.5 in a divisional road game is a lot to lay. The total gives cleaner value and aligns with how these programs actually project to play against each other.

The Pick: Miami/Wake Forest Over 55.5
