Saturday night’s Week 0 game at Doak Campbell Stadium has one of the biggest spreads on the entire opening slate, and the situational factors all point to Florida State delivering the beatdown the market is expecting.
The Seminoles are 30.5-point home favorites over the Aggies with a total sitting at 52.5. That’s a massive spread, and normally laying 30-plus points against any FBS opponent gives me pause. But when you look at how Mike Norvell has handled similar spots throughout his tenure at Florida State, and when you understand the specific pressure he’s operating under this season, the reasoning becomes clear.
Let’s start with Norvell’s history in these exact matchups.
When Norvell has had a chance to play an overmatched non-conference opponent as a heavy favorite, he has NEVER let up. The results speak for themselves. In 2024, Florida State beat East Texas A&M 77-3 and Kent State 66-10. In 2023, they beat Southern Miss 66-13 and North Alabama 58-13. In 2022, Duquesne got the same treatment. That’s five straight games in this exact profile where Florida State kept the foot on the accelerator through four full quarters and covered massive spreads with room to spare. Norvell isn’t a coach who takes his foot off the gas late — he uses these games to build offensive rhythm, evaluate depth, and let his quarterbacks pad their statistics.
Now the added motivation.
Norvell is on the hot seat entering 2026. Florida State went 2-10 in 2024 (a genuine disaster after the 13-1 season the year before) and only recovered to 5-6 in 2025 — missing a bowl game for the second consecutive year. When your program’s head coach is fighting for his job, Week 0 becomes the perfect spot to make an emphatic statement. Norvell will be calling this game like it matters, which for a 30.5-point favorite against an outmanned opponent means running up the score.
Then there’s what New Mexico State is bringing to Tallahassee.
The Aggies went 4-8 last year under second-year head coach Tony Sanchez. Their 2026 recruiting class was ranked 137th in the country and finished last in Conference USA. The program lost general manager David Cobb — who had been assistant to Sanchez — just a week before fall practice began, which is exactly the kind of internal disruption that leaves a program unprepared for a season opener.
