Toledo Rockets at Sacramento State Hornets

Toledo is a 25.5-point favorite at most books with a total of 52.5, and my play is Toledo -25.5, as a lean more than a hammer.
Can Sacramento State score enough to stay inside four touchdowns? That’s really the whole handicap. For all the talk about a cross-country midweek trip, a huge number and a first-ever meeting, the answer keeps coming back the same: probably not.
Start with the Rockets. First-year coach Mike Jacobs has Toledo at 6-2 and tied for second in the MAC, and his offense leads the league in scoring at 37.4 points per game. It also leads the MAC in total offense and passing offense, and it has allowed just six sacks all season, the fewest in the conference. John Alan Richter has been one of the more efficient passers in the country by expected points per dropback, and CJ Miller just ran for 183 yards in a 45-38 win over Western Michigan. Toledo has scored at least 34 points in every game it has won.
That Western Michigan game was on Oct. 24. Toledo hasn’t played since, so it shows up with almost two weeks of rest. Sacramento State played last Friday, so this is a five-day turnaround for the Hornets.
The Hornets’ offense is the whole story
Sacramento State, 2-7 under first-year coach Alonzo Carter in its first season of MAC play, did just pick up its first conference win, a 31-10 thumping of Kent State. Before that? A 34-17 loss at Ball State, a 48-7 loss to Ohio and a 38-10 loss at Bowling Green. The Kent State result looks like the exception, not the trend.
The opponent-adjusted numbers from CollegeFootballData are brutal. The Hornets rank 136th nationally in EPA per play on offense, which measures how much each snap helps your scoring chances. They’re 137th on the ground and 130th in success rate, meaning they rarely stay on schedule. Now they run into a Toledo run defense that ranks 18th, plus an Andrew Zock-led pass rush. Zock had 8.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in October alone. The Rockets lead the MAC with 23 sacks.

The other side is just as lopsided. Toledo’s passing game ranks 24th in EPA, and Sacramento State’s pass defense ranks 118th. The Hornets are also 130th in havoc rate, so they almost never generate tackles for loss, sacks or turnovers to blow up a drive. A Toledo line that has given up six sacks in eight games should give Richter as much time as he wants.
Why 25.5 still makes me a little nervous
Big spreads can turn on what happens late. If Toledo is up 35 at halftime, Jacobs will empty the bench, and a garbage-time touchdown is all it takes for the Hornets to get inside the number. One respected model, GordStats, makes Toledo about a 24-point favorite, a little under the market. The trip also matters. It’s Toledo’s first game in California since 2022, with a 4 p.m. local kickoff on a Wednesday. And the market has already come down from an opener of 27.5. That’s why this is a lean. I’d pass at 27 or higher.
Still, Toledo should control this game on both lines of scrimmage, and it’s coming in rested. I’ll trust the Rockets to win big and hang on to the cover.
