USC is a 23.5-point road favorite over Rutgers with a total of 57.5. My play is the Scarlet Knights getting the points.

USC’s ATS profile this season is the entry point here. The Trojans are 1-2 against the spread through three games. They opened the year by hosting San Jose State as 37.5-point favorites and won 42-26 — failing to cover by more than 20 points. They followed that up with a Fresno State game where they were again favored by a big number and failed to cover. Their only ATS win came in a Louisiana game where they scored 49 points. That’s not the profile of a team that consistently covers big spreads on the road.

Lincoln Riley’s USC teams have shown a pattern of playing down to inferior opponents. Riley’s teams historically start fast and then let up when the game gets out of hand, which is exactly the kind of coaching approach that keeps underdogs in games well past what the market prices in. The 42-26 win over San Jose State is the specific evidence. USC led that game comfortably at halftime but couldn’t put it away — they got outscored in the second half. That’s a coaching philosophy that produces backdoor covers, not blowout finishes.

Now the travel factor. This is USC’s first road game of the season and they’re crossing the country from Los Angeles to New Jersey. That’s a three-hour time difference and a taxing travel day, especially given USC’s West Coast body clocks. The game kicks off at 3:30 PM ET on the East Coast, which is 12:30 PM PT — the exact time when USC players are typically finishing their pregame meal, not in game mode. Even elite USC teams historically struggle in this exact spot, and past performances at East Coast venues have shown consistent underperformance relative to spreads.

Rutgers isn’t a bad team despite the 0-2 start. They lost 37-21 to UMass in an upset (though UMass is much better than expected this year), and they lost 28-21 to Boston College while committing four interceptions. Take away four turnovers and Rutgers likely wins that Boston College game. That’s a team that’s competitive when they take care of the ball, and Greg Schiano — in his 18th season overall as a head coach — knows how to prepare his team to keep games close against bigger, better opponents.

The Rutgers offense has real weapons even with Surace’s turnover issues. The Scarlet Knights have shown they can move the ball, they just haven’t been able to protect it consistently. Against USC’s defense that has allowed 30+ points in each of its three games, Rutgers should be able to score in the 20s. If they score 20+ points and USC wins by 20 — very much a realistic outcome given USC’s ATS profile — Rutgers covers +23.5.

Realistic outcomes: USC 38, Rutgers 17 (21 points, Rutgers covers +23.5); USC 42, Rutgers 20 (22 points, Rutgers covers); USC 45, Rutgers 24 (21 points, Rutgers covers); or USC 49, Rutgers 21 (28 points, doesn’t cover). Three of four scenarios cover, and the fourth requires USC to run up the score against a team that will fight for four quarters.

The Pick: Rutgers Scarlet Knights +23.5
