UTEP Miners at Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma opens the 2026 season Friday night as 41.5-point favorites over UTEP with a total of 50.5. The value here is on the total staying under.
The recent history for Oklahoma in this exact spot tells us everything. In 2025, Brent Venables’ team was favored by 30 or more points in two games. Both of those games stayed under the total. That’s not a small sample size — that’s every single time Oklahoma was in this profile last year, the game went Under. Now they’re a 41.5-point favorite in Week 1 against a UTEP team that went 2-10 and has to travel to Norman.
The pattern makes sense when you look at Oklahoma’s defensive identity. Venables’ defense finished 6th in FBS in scoring last year. Their 18 sacks in the fourth quarter were 2nd most in the country. This is a unit that keeps the pressure on for four full quarters and doesn’t give up big scoring bursts. UTEP’s offense is going to have real trouble putting up any meaningful points against them.
Speaking of UTEP’s offense — the numbers are ugly. Their 20 passing interceptions in 2025 were the 2nd most in college football. Their 0.6 catch rate was 8th lowest among teams with at least 200 targets. That’s not just a struggling offense — that’s an offense that turns the ball over in bunches and can’t complete passes. Oklahoma’s defense is going to feast on those tendencies.
The realistic UTEP scoring outcome against this Oklahoma defense is 3-7 points, and even that requires some garbage-time work. Combine that with what Oklahoma is likely to score, and the math gets tight against the total.
Now to Oklahoma’s side of the ledger.
The Sooners have a massive Week 2 game on the road at Michigan. That’s a Top-15 matchup and one of the biggest early-season games in the country. Venables is not going to let his starters get injured or extended in a Week 1 game against UTEP. John Mateer plays until the game gets out of hand, then the backups take over. That happened in Oklahoma’s previous blowout spots too — starters played the first half, backups played the second half, and the second-string offenses couldn’t move the ball fast enough to push totals over the line.
If Oklahoma wins 45-7, that’s 52 combined. If they win 42-6, that’s 48. If they win 38-3, that’s 41. All at or below the total.
The path to the Over requires Oklahoma to score 45+ AND UTEP to hit double digits, which is a specific combination that hasn’t materialized in Oklahoma’s blowout wins under Venables recently.
I considered the side. UTEP +41.5 has value based on Oklahoma’s pattern of pulling starters early, but 41.5 is a big number to lay in a game where the market has clearly identified the mismatch. The total is where the historical data gives me the cleaner read.
The Pick: UTEP/Oklahoma Under 50.5
