UTSA Roadrunners at Florida Atlantic Owls

UTSA is a 7-point road favorite at Florida Atlantic, and the total is 72.5 at most books. My play is UTSA -7 (-110).
Three weeks ago Army ran the ball 60 times against Florida Atlantic, threw it twice, and won by 32. The Black Knights piled up 479 rushing yards and scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions. One week later Rice ran for 499 more. The easy excuse is that Army and Rice run the option, and option football makes everybody look silly. Fine. But UTSA doesn’t need an option to do this. It needs a running back, a decent offensive line, and a defense across the field that can’t get people on the ground. It has all three Thursday night.
Boca Raton has a tackling problem, and the coach said so
Zach Kittley has been honest about it. “We’ve been missing tackles tonight, which shows up, and that’s when those explosive plays happen,” the FAU coach said earlier this season. The problem hasn’t gone away. In their last three games the Owls gave up 56 to Army, 49 to Rice and 48 at North Texas.
The adjusted numbers back up what the coach is seeing. CollegeFootballData’s opponent-adjusted figures rank FAU’s run defense 137th in the country in expected points allowed per carry. That adjustment matters, because it already accounts for the option teams on the schedule. Put plainly, even after you grade on a curve, nobody in FBS gets less out of a running play’s defense than Florida Atlantic. The Owls allow 35.8 points per game, 131st nationally.
Now look at who’s coming. UTSA’s run game ranks 10th by that same adjusted measure. Will Henderson III has 664 yards at better than six a carry, and A’Marion Peterson gives the Roadrunners a second back to lean on. In UTSA’s last game, a 42-19 win at Tulane on Oct. 24, the Roadrunners ran for six touchdowns and forced six takeaways. Henderson ran for 102 yards that afternoon. Then UTSA got a bye week to heal up and draw up more of the same.

Veltkamp can keep score, but only if he gets the ball
Here’s the catch. Caden Veltkamp is legitimately good. He has 2,536 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and only five interceptions, and Easton Messer (74 catches, 898 yards, 9 touchdowns) is one of the most productive receivers in the country. FAU converts third downs at a 53% clip, sixth in FBS. This offense will score.
The question is how often it gets the chance. FAU runs 79 plays a game, fourth-most in the nation, and that tempo works great when the other team is trading quick touchdowns. It works a lot worse when the other team is grinding out eight-play drives on the ground and handing the Owls the ball back with 15 seconds gone off the play clock. UTSA’s job Thursday is to stay on schedule, keep Veltkamp on the sideline and turn red-zone trips into sevens.
The Roadrunners’ defense also brings a little bite after the bye. Owen Pewee had three sacks at Tulane and was named the American’s Defensive Player of the Week. UTSA isn’t a lockdown unit, and FAU’s passing game should find yards, but a couple of drive-killing sacks on a fast-paced offense go a long way.
The case against laying a touchdown on the road
Seven points on the road is a real number, and a few things could burn it. Florida Atlantic is dangerous in the return game: Messer has two punt-return touchdowns and Leonard Farrow has two kickoff-return scores, so one short field could swing the margin. FAU is 3-1 against the spread at home and has gone over the total in seven of eight games, and in a shootout like that, a garbage-time Owls touchdown can turn a comfortable cover into a push or worse. The Roadrunners also have a homecoming date with North Texas on Nov. 14, though a team chasing an unbeaten league record shouldn’t need a reminder about this one.
The models land in the same neighborhood I do. GordStats makes it UTSA by 7.8, and ESPN’s matchup predictor gives the Roadrunners about a 75% chance to win. That’s not a massive edge on the number, but the matchup is the kind that grows as the game goes on. Tired, missed-tackle defenses don’t get better in the fourth quarter. UTSA has won the last two meetings, including a 36-10 rout in Boca Raton in 2023, and I expect the ground game to decide this one again.
My projected final: UTSA 41, Florida Atlantic 30
The Pick: UTSA -7
