Quick question before you bet the side: who in this game is going to get a stop?
Kentucky is the best story in the SEC. Will Stein is the first Wildcats coach since 1913 to open his first season 6-1, with wins over Texas A&M, LSU and Oklahoma, and a share of first place. Vanderbilt is going the other way, with four straight losses and no SEC wins, learning what life looks like after Diego Pavia. Everybody is circling the spread because this smells like a trap game: Vandy has won its last two trips to Lexington, and Kentucky has a bye next week. I’d rather skip the guessing game and bet what both teams do on defense, which is give up points.
The Commodores’ defense has sprung a leak
Vandy allows 29.7 points a game, one of the worst marks in the country, and it has been even worse near the goal line. Opponents score touchdowns on 75% of their red zone trips, which ranks 125th. Clark Lea didn’t sugarcoat it Tuesday: “we’ve been awful in the red zone.” Every FBS team on the schedule except Auburn has hung at least 26 on this group.
Kentucky is well built to take advantage. The Wildcats win the down-to-down battle on 48% of their snaps, top 30 nationally, and their run game ranks ninth in success rate. Leading rusher CJ Baxter sat out the Oklahoma game as a precaution, and the offense sputtered without him, running for barely 70 yards. Stein expects him back. Getting Baxter back against a defense that has been bleeding over 170 rushing yards a game in power-conference play is a big upgrade.

Kentucky bends, and Jared Curtis gives away short fields
Here’s what makes the Over work: Kentucky’s defense isn’t a brick wall either. It gives up a successful play on 45% of snaps, which ranks 112th, and it allows nearly 250 passing yards a game. It wins because it takes the ball away. The Wildcats are +11 in turnover margin, and Jordan Castell leads the SEC with four interceptions.
That matters because true freshman Jared Curtis has been generous. He has seven picks against six touchdown passes, plus seven fumbles, and Vandy has lost the turnover battle three straight weeks. Stein calls him “a freak show,” and he means it as a compliment. A big arm and a willingness to force throws produce explosive plays for Vanderbilt and short fields for Kentucky. Either way, the scoreboard moves. Junior Sherrill (628 receiving yards, a catch in 44 straight games) gives Curtis a target the Wildcats will have trouble covering.
Both teams are 5-2 to the Over this season. The forecast is mild, around 57 degrees with almost no wind. Nothing in the weather gets in the way.
What could go wrong. Neither team plays fast; both sit around 64 snaps a game, so possessions could be scarce. Kentucky’s last game was a 21-13 grind in Norman. Lea also talked about getting back to a “field position game,” and a Vandy team that shortens the game and keeps Curtis safe could drag this under. One Kentucky blowout where the starters leave early could also stall the total in the 40s. My cutoff: I’m good at 51.5 or 52, and I’d pass at 53 or higher.
Kentucky probably wins comfortably. I’d rather have the total, where both defenses’ flaws pay off no matter who’s ahead.
