The Border War kicks off the 2026 season for both Wyoming and Colorado State on Saturday evening at Canvas Stadium. The Rams are 3 to 3.5-point home favorites with a total of 46.5. The value here is on the road team getting the points.
Both programs are coming off ugly seasons. Wyoming went 4-8. Colorado State went 2-10. Neither team enters this game with any real momentum or clear identity, and Colorado State’s 2-10 record was built partly on a 2-5 mark at their own home stadium. That’s not the profile of a team you’d normally trust to lay the number against a conference rival.
Colorado State does have a couple of trends worth noting on the surface. The Rams are 14-4 straight up in their last 18 games as favorites and 12-7 straight up in their last 19 home games. But those are all-time trends that stretch back through better seasons and don’t account for how bad this specific Colorado State team was in 2025. When your team wins 2 games and goes 2-5 at home, historical favorite trends lose a lot of their predictive value.
Wyoming had their own road problems in 2025 — 1-5 on the road, which is what the market is leaning on to price this as a Colorado State cover. But rivalry games play differently than typical road games. The Border War brings its own energy, and Wyoming will not roll over just because they struggled on the road elsewhere last year. Fans travel. The intensity is elevated. Teams that couldn’t get out of their own way in normal road environments often play their best football in rivalry spots.
The predictive models agree that this game is essentially a coin flip. Dimers projects Colorado State to win 25-22 — a 3-point margin, which is right at the spread and means Wyoming either covers or pushes. YouWager has it 27-20 Colorado State — a 7-point margin, which would give the Rams the cover. When the models are that split, the value tends to favor the side with more variance, which is the underdog getting the points.
The 46.5 total is telling too. It dropped from 47.5 at open, which suggests Under money coming in. Two teams with bad offenses from 2025 that scored a combined 40 points per game last year should have a hard time reaching 47 in a Week 1 rivalry game where both defenses will be amped up. This game is much more likely to finish 24-21 or 27-20 than it is to finish 34-27.
Colorado State does have the coaching stability and the home crowd, but their 2025 defensive struggles and Wyoming’s ability to bring rivalry-level intensity make 3.5 points feel like a lot to lay. If Colorado State wins 24-20 or 27-21, both of those results fall inside the spread. That’s the more likely outcome given how these programs actually performed last year.
I looked at the total. There’s a case for the Under given the drop from 47.5 and both offenses’ struggles. But the side offers cleaner value on the number.
