The New England Patriots suffered a disappointing 17-16 loss to the Miami Dolphins in last week’s home opener. Despite a solid performance from rookie quarterback Mac Jones, the Patriots failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities and coughed up a couple of costly fumbles. On Sunday, the Patriots will travel to MetLife Stadium for a chance at redemption when they meet the New York Jets as 4 point favorites. The Patriots will try to avoid starting the season 0-2 SU for the first time since 2001 in Head Coach Bill Belichick’s first season in Foxborough.
Personally, I believe the Patriots have an excellent chance to avoid the 0-2 mark this weekend. Despite the loss to Miami, the Patriots executed their offense and defense relatively well. Running back Damien Harris rushed for 100 yards, Jones completed 29 of 39 passing for 281 yards with a score, and the Patriots defense played well as expected. The public has been critical of Belichick since losing Brady to Tampa Bay but the Patriots are still a well-coached football team. For the New York Jets, I’m not sure if that is the case. The Jets were a bit of a mess in last week’s opening loss to the Panthers. Though the final score reflected a closer outcome (19-14), the Jets struggled on both sides of the ball and I believe they are going to have some serious issues on offense again this Sunday.
New England Patriots vs. New York Jets Betting Analysis
Before I get too critical, I want to clearly state that I am a fan of rookie QB Zach Wilson. Wilson has the competitiveness and athletic ability to make things happen for the Jets offense. Unfortunately, the Jets’ offensive line is downright awful. The Jets could not protect Wilson against a subpar Panthers defense that yielded 6 sacks and perhaps more importantly New York could not run the football by any stretch of the imagination. New York had multiple failed attempts in 3rd and 1 and 4th and inches type scenarios. For that reason, I believe the Jets will have an even more difficult time in this weekend’s match-up against a more talented Patriots defensive front.
If the Jets had a better defense, I could potentially see a low-scoring slugfest and give them the benefit of the doubt. However, Carolina Panthers QB and former Jets QB Sam Darnold ripped the Jets’ defense for 279 passing yards with a touchdown. I am not sold that Mac Jones is an elite NFL talent but he does not make many mistakes. I believe there will be plenty of downfield opportunities to receivers Jakobi Meyers and the speedy threat of Nelson Agholor. If Jones can just connect on a few of those opportunities, the Patriots run game should be able to do the rest of the work. RB Damien Harris actually looked really good last week and it will be interesting to see if he can duplicate his week 1 performance. Either way, the Patriots will win the match-ups on both sides of the ball.
