Sunday at 1:00pm the 3-3 Tennessee Titans will travel north to take on the winless Cleveland Browns. The Titans are sitting in a tie for first place in the AFC South while the Browns are obviously dead last in the AFC North Division. Although the Browns are winless, I do believe this is potentially their weekend to stop the bleeding and get a win. Tennessee is coming off of a short week after playing on Monday night, and then having to travel to a game like this could end up being a trap.
The line has the Titans as a six point road favorite over Cleveland and the total points are set at 46.5 combined. As of early Wednesday, the betting public was heavy on the Titans to cover the spread. 66% of the action was on Tennessee and as for the total points the 54% of the action is on this game to fly over the posted 46.5. On the season the Titans are 3-3 against the spread and the Browns are 1-5. Again, this could change on Sunday.
The Titans are coming off of a good win against the Indianapolis Colts this past Monday night. Not only was it a big division win for the Titans to keep pace with the Texans, but it also ended an eleven game losing streak against the Colts. In this game, Marcus Mariota proved he is more than a mobile and scrambling QB. He showed that he also has the ability to be a pocket passer. Mariota threw for 306 yards with a touchdown and an interception on 23 for 32 passing. This weekend against the Browns it will be very important for Mariota to keep the offense rolling. Not only does Mariota have to continue the success he found against the Indianapolis win, but the run game needs to again play well in order to keep Mariota clean and to open up the playaction. Part of the offensive success and the passing game’s success was largely due to Derrick Henry and his 131 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. If the Titans can get this type of production again, it could open up the offense and Cleveland would have a hard time keeping pace.
The 0-6 Browns announced that DeShone Kizer would be the starting quarterback against the Titans this Sunday. There were flashes at times tat Kizer could be a good QB, but overall his season stats have been less than stellar. Kizer has a passing completion percentage of 50.9% and has three touchdowns to nine interceptions….not good. Yes, some of this is because Kizer has some learning and growing to do, but it also does not help that the entire Cleveland Browns team is not playing well. This weekend, Cleveland needs to get after Mariota. If he is able to make big plays then it could be a very long and disappointing day for the Browns. Cleveland not only needs to pressure Mariota, but they need to keep this game low scoring. If it gets in the mid to upper 20s, they are in trouble. If the Browns can drag this game out, milk the clock, and get a couple of scores then they have a punchers chance.
The chalk and my brain tells me that Tennessee goes into Cleveland and dominates this game. However, I truly believe this game ends up a lot closer than expected. I think the Titans get the win but I like them win this game something like 21-17 which means they will not cover the spread. Cleveland will be 0-7 but against the spread when its all said and done they will get their 2nd cover of the season.
