Takeaways From Week 12

While it is hard to declare the Jets “red-hot”, it is safe to say that Gang Green is playing their best football as they venture into this affair riding a three-game win and cover streak. Last week, the Jets reached their apex of the 2019 season when they routed the Oakland Raiders at MetLife Stadium by a score of 34-3. The Jets covered easily as a 3.5-point home underdog and staging the upset. Over their present win and cover streak, the Jets were the underdog in all three occasions.

The Bengals step into this intra-conference match-up off a 16-10 loss in divisional play last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Closing as a 5.5-point underdog, the Bengals narrowly failed to cover as the underdog host taking back the touchdown-minus-conversion. The Bengals have covered just once in their last five outings.

How the Public is Betting the New York-Cincinnati Game

An incredible 79% of the consensus fancy the Jets. Despite the lean, the line has yet to move at the time this article was written on Tuesday morning.

The Historicals

The Bengals have won and covered in the last two meetings between both sides. Cincy and New York last met in 2016 when the Jets hosted the Bengals in East Rutherford. As a one-point underdog, Cincinnati would stage a one-point upset winning 23-22.

Betting Trends

The Favorite has gone 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings. This trend favors the Jets. Contrarily, the Home Team is also 6-2 ATS in the previous eight fixtures, and that trend favors the Bengals. As a result, neither of these trends really carry any weight in picking or fading a side. For Totals players, the Over is 4-1 ATS in the last five contests.

Injury Concerns

Cincinnati may return Wide Receiver Jeremy Ross from the Injury Reserve list for this contest. Ross has remained on the sideline after sustaining a collarbone fracture earlier this season. Ross would serve as a great secondary option to complement Bengals leading receiver Tyler Boyd who stepped up into the lead role since A.J. Green has also been out with an ankle injury.

Why We Like Cincinnati To Cover

This game is going to come down to motivation and Cincinnati hoping to avoid a winless campaign in 2019. After all, no team wants to go an entire season without a win. With two divisional matches against Cleveland, a road trip to Miami, and a bout with New England the horizon, Cincinnati knows this is its best chance to get a win against a Jets team that lost on the road earlier this season a then-winless Miami Dolphins. I expect the Bengals faithful to be out in droves for this one and Cincinnati to respond with a spirited performance. New York’s blowout win over Oakland has undoubtedly spurned an overreaction, and it is for this reason, we see the Jets laying road points for the second time this season. The first occasion was the aforementioned Miami loss, where the Jets were priced at an identical number. Miami, however, would dominate Gang Green and defeat them 26-18. There is no way I would advocate laying these points yet again as the Jets could very well be upset here given the spot. After all, New York has won just one game on the road this season.

Keith’s Pick to Cover the Spread: Cincinnati +160 (Money Line)

For those that want to take the three points plus the hook, I can understand why that would look appetizing here, albeit points will probably be a scarcity given the boom-or-bust element of both offenses. However, I am going to trade the points away here to enhance the return and take Cincinnati outright on the Money Line. As stated, this is Cincinnati’s best shot to avert an 0-16 season and even tank the rest of the way if it elected to secure a high draft pick. However, the first thing first, getting the monkey off of their back. The Bengals have played their opposition tough in the last two weeks in games settled by one score. This week, Cincinnati will get over the proverbial hump and snag their first win of the season at the expense of the New York Jets.
